If you’ve followed any of the Adventures of Little Fuzzies, you know they have a pretty great life. They watch you practice, raid the kitchen at night, take bubble baths, and play all day.
But now, the fuzzy goofballs are demanding a vacation in the Bahamas! Between the “Beach Boys” reminiscent harmonies and chromaticism, and the lyrics about Fuzzies sipping lemonade and surfing with their buddies, students will be endeared to these piano helpers that evidently have their own life!
What Level is Fuzzies on Vacation?
Fuzzies on Vacation is one of five elementary pieces from the Adventures of Little Fuzzies series. The smallest note value is a quarter note. There is no pedaling. Helpful finger numbers are written throughout, and changes in hand position are denoted by a circled number so that students know when their position will be slightly changing. This helps students not to get “stuck” in one position. When a hand position change occurs, it is only shifting over by one note, and all intervals are the same as the previous hand position.
Fuzzies on Vacation is written in C major, with occasional chromaticism added in. All accidentals are notated. The last several measures contain a chromatic walk up the piano, always using finger 2 so that students can focus on the notes, rather than the fingering.

Great summer piece!
This series has been great for a 5 year old student (who has performed Little Fuzzies and Kitchen Raiders from this series at previous recitals). We have started Fuzzies on Vacation now during summer. The playful lyrics, pattern based melody and using fuzzies on the piano really engages this student. I’m glad there are several pieces to continue the momentum!

I have started a “Little Fuzzies Club” in my studio for my youngest students. One is a beginner and the others have had lessons for 1-3 years. Members have a handbook where they put the Little Fuzzies stickers once they’ve completed a piece. Their pictures are on a bulletin board under the title “Little Fuzzies Club”. Because of their interest, I’ve purchased every Little Fuzzies piece that Wendy Stevens has composed. The music has repetitive patterns in most cases but there are challenges they wouldn’t have in beginning lesson books: hand positions that move around the keyboard, music symbols (sharps, flats, naturals), pedal usage, 1st and 2nd endings. Because the lyrics are so engaging and the Fuzzies have humorous adventures all around the house and at different times of the year, students love playing them. Their lesson book pieces have become “too easy” and I’ve been using them for sight reading activities. Having a fun piece to practice motivates my students to go to the piano willingly and share their music with others.

I have Little Fuzzies fans in my studio, and Vacation is at the top of their list this summer (we’ve already gone through BBQ in a couple cases, and summer just began for us 🙂 One student in particular is using Faber, and we just finished a sequenced piece with fingering reminders there – they loved that it made this piece that much easier! And they loved the chromatics on finger two – great reinforcement for half steps! Little Fuzzies, like the rest of ComposeCreate is definitely Music Kids Love!
