What Level is Box of Chocolates?

Box of Chocolates is a mid elementary piano solo written in A minor. The smallest note value is a quarter note. The secretive sound allows students to really get into the lyrics of these silly fuzzies and their antics, and makes practicing both staccatos and phrase markings within a single phrase more easily understood and practiced for students at this level. The lyrics are silly, and the staccatos land on words that students will find easier to sing with a staccato sound, allowing them to play those staccatos and phrases more intuitively.

Box of Chocolates is written in 4/4, and there is no pedaling. Helpful fingerings are included. The biggest interval played is a fourth. Hand position changes are indicated with a circled finger number. These hand position changes occur only a couple of times, in one particular section where students move their hands down by one note, playing a repeated pattern over and over again. This particular section could even be taught by rote if your student struggles with hand position changes or accidentals.

Bonus Mp3 and QR Code

Box of Chocolates includes a bonus mp3 of this performance with your purchase. You may send this mp3 to your student to help them learn the piece and remember how it sounds.

Plus, a QR code is included on the first page of the PDF (not pictured in the sample) so students can scan the code and it will take them directly to the performance recording of the piece. This can help them be inspired and learn the piece even more effectively without you having to send the mp3 to them!

I assigned this darling piece to two of my elementary students and they are really enjoying it. The words make learning the piece extra fun, and I love that it inspires them to use their imagination to create a story as they play!

This song is newly released and already a kid favorite! They think the lyrics are hilarious and find instant success in the easy to follow patterns. I use this for reinforcement of them reading their steps/seconds with added finger numbers for larger intervals. And when they finish the song they LOVE collecting the corresponding Music Achievement Card! Added to all that: the new QR code makes it super easy for them to access their music!

Box of Chocolates is perfect for my elementary students! Those that have played other Little Fuzzies songs are liking the continuation of their adventures and those new to them are loving the ease of playing the song with the cute words. It’s great to have a Valentine song that isn’t just for my beginners. Very cute song reinforcing many concepts that my students are learning. The added fingerings here and there are really helpful!

I assigned this piece to a student who doesn’t practice a lot. At first when she looked at the piece she expressed that it looked too difficult. I easily sent a copy to her parent using the QR code and asked that she have her child listen to it. After two weeks she has most of it down and is enjoying the piece. I’m using this piece as a possible Spring recital piece. Thank you again Wendy Stevens!!

This song has all kinds of perfection. I showed it to a couple of my boy students, and the idea of anything fuzzy in a box of chocolates was sufficiently gross to make them want to play it NOW. The girls I showed it to hugged themselves over the cuteness AND chocolates (“YUM!!!!”), and as a teacher, the QR code is such a relief!!!!! I spend precious time searching out or creating my own recordings of songs for students to hear pieces. Here, you’ve done it for me, saving me time. What a concept–to have a QR code they or their parents can scan, and listen to the song just like that? The QR codes are a win, win, win again!!!!! Little Fuzzies are a win, win, win. Compose Create and the people attached to it are win, win, win!!!! Thanks so much for music that always draws my students and their adults into love of piano.

Wendy, I love the new QR codes. I have used the Little Fuzzies Box of Chocolates and Pot O’ Gold with 3 of my students and Swept Away with 2 students. The QR codes have been so helpful. I love that I don’t have to look up the songs on YouTube to show them what the songs sound like and that the students can go home and easily hear their songs.
My first student who I taught the Box of Chocolates asked me if I had any more Little Fuzzies songs. I only had the very first one which was very easy for him, but he wanted to play it. This week I taught him the Pot O’ Gold and then asked him if there was any other song he would like to play. He said he wants to play all the Little Fuzzy music. I felt very happy that he liked this music so much.
Thank you for all you do for us teachers that makes teaching much easier and fun for me and the students.

I had a 3rd grade boy that I pulled out Box of Chocolates for. I told him I had a Valentine’s Day song for him. He quickly responded that he didn’t do Valentine’s Day and no lovey dovey songs. I responded back that it was a Little Fuzzy one and he went OH, OK!! I played and sang and he loved it!!! I had another father of a student that loved the words (father also liked the QR code). Box of Chocolates has been a great hit. I had a little heart shaped candy box I had saved from years ago. So, the Little Fuzzies made their way into it. 🙂 The cover and box have been on display on my music stand for a couple of weeks. The students loved seeing the Fuzzies in it. What fun!!!

My students love this piece! I love that the QR code made access to a recording easy for them to listen to and sing along at home before we began learning to play it. Now, I can’t get them to stop playing it! Plus, they earned the achievement card to add to their Fuzzies collection. Highly recommend!

I admit that at first I wasn’t particularly interested in these pieces. I thought my students would not appreciate the humor or that the fuzzies might feel too “babyish” for some of them.

Boy, was I WRONG. I started out by giving this piece to a couple of students, and they loved it so much I soon found myself printing more and more copies to give to more and more students! They are already eagerly awaiting the next installment to see what the Little Fuzzies do next! As a teacher, I love the musical concepts and how the stories enable me to teach artistry in a way that is meaningful to even my littlest ones.
