The Little Fuzzies are back for a new adventure… they’ve noticed beautifully colored leaves falling from the trees, and see how kids love to play in the leaves! It looks like fun! True to form, the Fuzzies get into mischief over and over, but this time, they’ve created a new competitive sport – Leaf Surfing! Snap on your helmet and get ready to ride to create your own leaf surfing routines!
Students will love singing the funny words that tell the story of the Little Fuzzies’ brand new sport and witnessing – and creating! – the leaf surfing “routines”. This Little Fuzzies series will be a teacher and student favorite, and a special variation section will keep students engaged in this piece long after autumn has turned into winter!
What Level is Little Fuzzies Leaf Surfing?
Little Fuzzies Leaf Surfing is an elementary level piece that centers around three verses of wonderfully compelling lyrics. It is written in triple meter with a hand position that resembles Middle C position, but without the thumbs sharing Middle C.
This piece contains a first, second, and third ending. Each verse describes the Little Fuzzies’ leaf surfing competition, with a cool “Leaf Surfing” section that tumbles up and down the piano keys, using one easy flat, some staccato, and a two-note slur. It’s a great way to introduce these articulations!
The smallest note value is a quarter note, and there is no pedaling. Students can choose the Leaf Surfing routines, which are variations on the first routine! This piece can be used to introduce creative variations, and encourage students to experiment with adding or taking away flats, adding or taking away articulations, or varying the way the Little Fuzzies surf on the leaves as they surf down to the ground.
How Can I Use Little Fuzzies to Enhance my Teaching?
You can use Little Fuzzies any time of year, not just in autumn! These small little fuzzy craft balls with google eyes are amazing at helping students find their starting note, be their audience, and remind them where to move!

My Little Fuzzies fans are so excited for this new piece! They love the energy and fun of “surfing” around the keyboard just like the Fuzzies do on the leaves. And I love the safety message I get to reinforce with them about wearing their helmets. 😉

My students in the studio have really enjoyed working on: Top Dog, Leaf Surfing, Autumn’s Awakening, Autumn Glow, Hay Ride, Falling to New. We will be starting both versions of Over the River and Through the Woods, Deck the Halls, Sledding Shenanigans, and likely some others from the past. The students really enjoy working on your music. They find it easy to read, enjoy the colorful title pages, and older ones are using the QR codes as well.

I love the fun variations of the surfing section. I give two fuzzies for this piece…one for section A and one for section B, the “surfing part.” If the surfing part is too difficult for the younger students, we just play section A. In autumn I have the piano decorated with leaves and pumpkins with a little tree with fuzzies hidden in it ready to catch a leaf and go surfing. It gives them a visual for the piece and gets them all excited to learn it.
