Lavender is a relaxed and sophisticated piece with a relaxed modern feel, solid pedagogical foundations, and wonderful patterns that will keep students motivated and interested. Lavender is lovely and calming, with so much depth!
What level is Lavender?
Lavender is a late elementary piano solo. The smallest note value is an eighth note. The piece can be taught by rote, reading, or a combination of both. The piece is in G major with the F sharps written in throughout (so no key signature). The left hand features several relaxed crossovers that deepen the mood of the piece, and allow students to look and sound mature. These crossovers can easily be taught by rote.
The left hand plays only fifths throughout the solo, with the exception of the crossovers. Lavender features pedaling every four measures through most of the piece (all notated) and is simple for even students new to pedaling.
Bonus recording included!
Lavender comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.
Plus, a QR code is included on the first page of the PDF (not pictured in the sample) so students can scan the code and it will take them directly to the performance recording of the piece. This can help them be inspired and learn the piece even more effectively without you having to send the mp3 to them!
More About the Sophisticated Rote and Reading® Color Music Series:
The Color Music Series helps strengthen both the eyes and ears of students who want a more sophisticated sound in their music. Lavender and this entire series will be appealing to teens, adults, and anyone who doesn’t want to sound like they are playing “kiddy” elementary music.
These special Rote and Reading® solos were composed because we believe that even the simplest music can sound sophisticated. We believe that teens and adults deserve beautiful, mature music that helps them express what they are feeling in musical ways.
Lavender is also included in this discounted Color Music Rote and Reading® Bundle 2 bundle that includes three late elementary Rote and Reading® solos. Also available are these Color Music solos:

Lavender is a gorgeous piece! My 8 year old granddaughter loves the color lavender so I knew this piece would be a hit and a motivator. Her favorite part is where the left hand crosses over right hand to play the eighth note pattern. Lavender is a piece that would work for teens and adults, too. Thank you, Wendy, for composing such versatile pieces.

The students in the studio are currently busy selecting their pieces for the Federation Festival in February. I usually play quite a few options, they say “maybe” or “no” and then we go back through “maybe” pieces and they settle on one. However, this time, as soon as I paid “Lavender” for two different students, they didn’t need or want to hear any other pieces. They each immediately said “Yes!”

New FAVORITE HIT in my studio! I only teach 2 afternoons a week and at least half my students are playing this one. Lyrical, easy to learn, patterned, gorgeous major 7ths and minor 7ths. Thank you Wendy!!!!

My students have benefited from the other color-themed pieces, and “Lavender” is another winner. When I play it for them, the students all look at me as if I’m crazy, and they tell me it’s took hard. Fortunately, Wendy is an expert at creating pieces that sound harder than they are. Once I explain the patterns and how it all works, they are hooked. And they love these pieces because they are accessible. They are thrilled to be playing them. Well done, Wendy!

Love how beautiful this piece sounds yet can be played fairly easy. I’m currently using it on a high school senior who doesn’t remember all the notes and struggles we have studied. This helps us review notes and practice moving hand positions while playing a beautiful song. Wendy I love your music!

Accessible and sophisticated. I am using it for elementary level high school and college students. Thank you for writing amazing pieces to help fill this gap.
