Say what you will about the Little Fuzzies – you can’t deny that they’re determined little creatures! And it will come as no surprise that they just have to reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Will there be obstacles? Yes. Do they have a distinct disadvantage thanks to being literal fluff balls? Of course. But they’re bold, brave, and determined, and sing all about their shining characteristics in this Irish-sounding solo. And their brazen belief in their own abilities and the antics that follow are just part of why we all love them so much!
What Level is Pot o’ Gold?
Pot o’ Gold is a mid elementary piano solo written in C Major. The piece has an Irish sound to it, and includes a light teacher “duet” that is just a simple bagpipe-like drone. There is a D.S. al Fine included. The piece is written in triple meter and is easy for students to “feel” because of the slightly Irish sound. The piece is composed of steps and skips and is a great way to reinforce intervallic reading. There is no pedaling.
The smallest note value is a quarter note. Students do play hands together for part of the piece, but the left hand is only playing G, tied for several measures. This allows students to focus more heavily on the right hand melody line, while still getting the more full sound of hands together playing. The right hand does jump up one octave at the very end of the piece, but is playing a line that has been repeated several times throughout the piece and is very familiar at the point.

My first student who I taught the Box of Chocolates asked me if I had any more Little Fuzzies songs. I only had the very first one which was very easy for him, but he wanted to play it. This week I taught him the Pot O’ Gold and then asked him if there was any other song he would like to play. He said he wants to play all the Little Fuzzy music. I felt very happy that he liked this music so much.
And I love the new QR codes. I have used the Little Fuzzies Box of Chocolates and Pot O’ Gold with 3 of my students and Swept Away with 2 students. The QR codes have been so helpful. I love that I don’t have to look up the songs on YouTube to show them what the songs sound like and that the students can go home and easily hear their songs.

It’s nearly March and my young students have begun singing Pot O’ Gold! One problem – the “Bold and Brave” chorus needs to be repeated, that’s their favorite part and it’s made the D.S. al Fine a little challenging because they don’t want to stop! The QR codes are great for them to easily access a recording and sing along at home. They are quickly picking this one up, and it’s been a boost of confidence for one that has been struggling. Rather like “Box of Chocolates”, I think they’ll be breaking out into this one whenever they get a chance!

What a great, fun piece to teach 3/4 time! My students are loving this piece – we all sing along with the chorus: “BOLD and BRAVE, we follow the magic! BOLD and BRAVE and nimble and light!” What a great way to FEEL the 3 beats and get the students really feeling that rhythm inside them! My students thought this was a hilarious adventure and can hardly wait for the next one!
