I feel nostalgia and wonder every time I sit at the piano with fresh Christmas or holiday music. It was the time of year I looked forward to most for piano lessons as a child. Probably because it was the only time of year my teacher let us play something outside of our method book!
I get the same feeling of anticipation and excitement as an adult, and felt it especially this year because there are so many beautiful pieces! The new Christmas and holiday music from Wendy Stevens, Diane Hidy, and Jason Sifford span all levels. There are gorgeous arrangements, a duet, and even an arrangement for piano, drum, and C instrument. Plus, some original pieces I’ll be playing to get me through the winter blues come January.

New Music from Wendy Stevens
O Come O Come Emmanuel is an early elementary arrangement (on the black keys) that contains ethereal sounds, making this piece sound more difficult than its playing level. Part of the “In Beautiful Places” series, this was written especially for teen and adult beginners who want to play with expression and musicality.
Angelic Little Fuzzy has us watching the antics of the ornery piano helpers once again. And this time, the Christmas season has them extra excited! When one breaks a Christmas ornament, it is quick to blame the cat. Then, it blurts out an innocent rendition of “Angels We Have Heard On High” to throw everyone off the scent. But your students know better! This continuation of the Little Fuzzies adventure series will have students giggling and wanting to practice.
I Saw Three Ships is a traditional English carol that many students may not have heard, but will love because of the big and Irish sounds! The Irish sounds and sea shanty feeling (thanks to triple meter) give this piece a beautiful sound that students will love being able to play at an elementary level. The easy-to-learn motive includes pedal, which will make this a winter recital favorite for beginning students.
The First Noel is a late elementary arrangement whose contemplative and sweet melodies give space to take a deep breath and reflect during the holiday season. Your students will love the extra confidence that comes with using pedal, and the easy expressiveness that will shine through their playing.
Snowdrops is an early intermediate solo that will bring peace to dreary and glum winter days. You can picture Snowdrops fighting against all odds to make their slow ascent through winter-hardened soil into a waiting world. This arrangement will encourage the heart of your students and anyone who may hear this solo that helps make the cold days of winter feel a little more hopeful.
O Come All Ye Faithful is an intermediate arrangement that provides subtle shifts from the traditional carol. The slightly jazz feel makes playing emotively feel natural. The B section explores the tension that those who would have been asked to “come let us adore him” on that first Christmas would have felt amidst obstacles and difficulties. This solo creates space for tension and reflectiveness alike, and is a refreshing take on a classic piece.
Silent Night is an advanced solo that is the 13th piece in the All Is Calm, All Is Bright collection. The musical idea of tintinnabulation was the inspiration for this quiet yet dramatic arrangement. Ringing bells are heard throughout the piece, giving the quietness a feeling of magnitude, reminding us that silent does not mean still. The harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic movement of this solo will fill you and your audience with expectancy, much like the expectancy on another silent night so long ago.
New Christmas Duet/Ensemble Music from Diane Hidy
He Is Born is a jubilant arrangement of the French Carol written for late elementary drum, intermediate C instrument, and late intermediate piano. The piano has a bagpipe-like quality that weaves beautifully around the C instrument, and the drum adds a layer of festivity to this joyous carol that will be a Christmas recital, church service, or family gathering favorite.

New Christmas Duet Music from Jason Sifford
Pat-A-Pan is an early intermediate piano duet. This playful arrangement of the French carol depicts shepherds celebrating the birth of Christ on their instruments. The drum beat begins (secondo player), and the melody of the flute can be heard as well (primo player). Both players get the opportunity to trade parts in this inventive arrangement of a timeless carol. Sure to be a recital or church service favorite!
