New Game! Spooky Sox: Stinky Sox for Halloween!

When I first started teaching, I didn’t realize what a wild card the week of Halloween would be. I expected students to be energetic the week before Spring break, and especially in the weeks between our Christmas recital and winter break. But I hadn’t accounted for the week of Halloween until students showed up on my doorstep dressed as ghosts, fairies, and characters from their favorite movies. And they were squirrely. Pumped full of mini candy bars and the excitement of trick-or-treating, I soon realized I needed something to keep them engaged during lessons. I’ve tried lots of different games and activities – but this year, I can’t wait to use Spooky Sox for Halloween. And I can use it with all of my students, from elementary through to intermediate!

What Is Spooky Sox?

Spooky Sox is the newest addition to the Stinky Sox Collection, which includes Stinky Sox and Stinky Stockings (a Christmas game). It’s a Halloween piano game that is part hot potato, part trivia, and all fun while students are reviewing (or learning) music theory and terms! Teachers have told us that all ages, from elementary kids to teens, love these games and the friendly competition they bring. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins! There are six categories of cards:

  • Playing: Cards include instructions like, “Approach the piano like a mummy and play an Eb up high on the piano.”
  • Theory and Halloween Riddles: Includes cards with level-appropriate theory questions, or Halloween riddles like the one below!

  • Singing and Guessing the Tune: Examples include, “hum the tune of your Halloween piano piece”, or “Hum The Itsy Bitsy Spider like you’re scared!”.
  • Boo! cards: These cards are just for fun! Things like, “If you’re going trick or treating this year, draw a Trick or Treat card”.
  • Acting: Putting a sheet over your head and acting out musical terms, making us guess what creepy Halloween creature you are, and more!
  • Trick or Treat Cards: These are cards students collect throughout the game to help add to their score.

Spooky Sox is a Halloween piano game that is very easy to prepare, which is a large part of why I love the Stinky Sox games so much. All you need is the cards (there are 4 files included so you can print with your home computer or through a print shop easily!), a spooky (or not so spooky) sock, and some music!

How Is This Different from Stinky Sox?

This game has all the fun of Stinky Sox, but with some differences that make it extra fun for Halloween! The biggest difference is that this time, we’re including three levels of cards! Elementary, late elementary, and intermediate cards are included. Teachers have been asking for more intermediate-level theory questions for these games, and we have them!

The cards have a definite Halloween flair, from Halloween riddles to acting like mummies and zombies. Even the cards feature cute little monsters! Print the cards out on purple and orange cardstock for even more of a Halloween aesthetic!

How Can I Use Spooky Sox for Halloween?

Here are just a few ways you can use these cards in your studio or classroom for a fun Halloween piano game:

  • Group lessons
  • Private lessons – play with your student!
  • In the classroom – divide students into groups, or get the whole class in on the fun!
  • Before a fall or Halloween recital. It’s a fantastic way to get out some nervous energy!
  • Halloween party – and because all levels can play at once, no one is left out!
  • A workshop ice-breaker
  • The week of Halloween – include a gift card for a group, or mini candy bars for individual students to win!
