Should I Peek? is an original holiday piece that will have kids giggling – especially at the end! An opportunity to improvise, lyrics to which every child can relate, and a catchy melody will make this a recital favorite.

You can almost hear the wrapping paper being sloooowly ripped off a present with chromatic movement after the verses – and the improvisational section gives students the chance to add their own ideas to the story! Did they peek? Did they not? Is the present something they liked? You can invite students to play in a way that tells the audience how you feel about the present they see!

What is the level of Should I Peek?

Should I Peek? is an elementary level piece written in C major. The smallest note value is a quarter note, and the entire piece is in common time. Helpful fingerings are written throughout. Lyrics are included.

The improvisational section gives students an opportunity to practice improvising successfully. It can be overwhelming for a beginning student to improvise when they’re still getting familiar with the keyboard. So giving students a solid boundary to work within (play only G’s), but with creative input (do it however you want!) gives them a chance to experience freedom at the piano, while still being musical.

Chromaticism is featured throughout Should I Peek, and is a wonderful way to get students comfortable with the topography of the piano. These chromatic sections can be easily taught by rote because the patterns and intervals are the same each time. There are 4 measures of a chromatic “scale”, and all notes are played using finger 2 so that students can easily play without being confused by fingering.

Such a fun song! The lyrics are playful and the melody is catchy. It also helped me introduce sharps in an easy way.

I have a student doing it this year and she loves it! The middle part with the improv on G is brilliant! Will definitely use it again!

This piece is so much fun for the students to play! I loved hearing what they came up with for the improv section in the piece. It is easy for my students to memories and to teach by rote. The lyrics are adorable too and all the children in the audience enjoyed hearing what the lyrics were before the student performed it. Congratulations on another successful piece!

I am love love LOVING ALL of your music. I found your website early in the fall and used many of your songs at the recital. 3 of the students insisted on playing Should I Peek. 🤩 One of the girls didn’t quite get it ready and was so disappointed. In working with her this semester, I knew she liked to sing. So, I told her that I really would like to have it sung so that the audience could hear the lyrics. When I told her this, her eyes just sparkles and she just squealed….”Mrs. Ruth, I can do that!” And she did! It was adorable and a highlight of the evening! Thanks for all you are making available for teachers.

Our recital was Dec. 3rd. The next week I gave Should I Peek? to LOTS of students – all except those WAY past that level. Last week and now this week, I’m hearing LOTS of Should I Peek? They love it! Even my “pull my hair out” student made it through easily! And it’s so cute, I’m not even tired of it!

The perfect piece for a new beginner, and the perfect way to introduce improvisation as well! So fun!

I gave this solo to a young beginner who was just starting to read notes on the staff. He absolutely devoured this solo and was so excited to “play the black AND white keys”. His mom shared with me that he went home and spent the rest of his afternoon working on this piece! He loves mixing up the improvisation section and playing it differently each time (finding all the g’s on the keyboard appears to be a fun challenge…). I also like the non-religious emphasis of this piece for my students who do not celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday.
