What sends shivers down your spine? If the answer is “ledger lines” for your elementary students, let this song help conquer their fear! Students will love this creepy, sneaky tune that makes them sound mature thanks to shifting registers. And, dynamics that suddenly change gives students a chance to “scare” their audience!
What Level is Shivers Down My Spine?
Shivers Down My Spine is elementary level. The smallest note value is a quarter note. There are a wide range of dynamics and rhythmic markings (like fermatas and a tempos), perfect for students learning to play expressively. The piece is written in a Lydian Dominant scale, but there is no key signature written in, instead using accidentals written in throughout the piece.
There is no pedaling in Shivers Down My Spine. While there are spots that shift registers, it is always with a repeating pattern. There is one change in hand position in the LH, but it is a simple shift with fingering written in. This makes it a great piece to introduce the concept of hand position changes to elementary students!
If students are new to ledger lines, the main theme can help them practice reading them in a way that doesn’t feel too scary (pun intended!). There are fingers and note names written in on just the first few ledger line notes to help students practice accurately.

My students love it when I get new pieces. They love knowing they’re the first to play something. 🙂 This piece absolutely does not disappoint!! It’s so fun to play and sounds so cool! Even with the unusual hand position, I have a young student who is willing to tackle it because it sounds amazing! She has sprained 3 of her left hand fingers, so she can only play with her thumb and pointer. And this song works!! She’s so thrilled she can still play it. Thank you again, Wendy!

Thank you Wendy. I did this one with the boys and they have loved it – although I have to admit I seem to feel more shivers down my spine when they are playing it than they do. Great piece to learn and plan.

Great piece for elementary kids at Halloween! They have loved playing it this season! Thanks for writing fun and well written pieces, Wendy!

Our neighborhood had a “Harvest Festival” in our park on 10/30 and my students provided the background music for the outdoor event (Yea, California! warm in October!). This piece was a big hit. We repeated it a couple times during the 2-hour event. Kids loved it!! Thank you, Wendy! It’s a winner!

This was a big hit with my students. I had several work on it – all at different levels, so for a few students I taught by rote. The students all enjoyed it – it sounded so impressive even for the earlier learners! We all love the haunting quality of the music – there is nothing childish or old-fashioned about this piece, that’s for sure!

I really enjoyed it, and have it on hold for a student to use next year.
It was quite unique
with all the chromaticism and repeated patterns.
Judy –
I have had several young students play Shivers Down My Spine. They liked
playing all over the piano and its sneaky sound.

So spooky! I love that the music and words are spooky without being too creepy or scary. A lot of my kids would love some spook but are sensitive. Fun piece!
