The musical idea of tintinnabulation was an inspiration for this piece. Most of this piece is played quietly, but maintains an intensity and depth that serves as a solemn reminder that silent does not always mean still.
This Silent Night from the All is Calm Collection contains a pedal point of D that is maintained through most of the piece. When it finally gives way to the C, there’s a palpable sigh that occurs in listeners and players alike. The harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic movement keeps this arrangement filled with unexpected anticipation, much like there would have been on another silent night.
