Exquisite, fresh, and in a newer contemporary setting, this age old favorite will bring new meaning to you and your audience. “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” is set in a simple meter, rather than the lilting compound meter, the subtle syncopations, unique harmony shifts, and carefully crafted setting may make this piece one of your favorites!
What’s the story behind this It Came Upon a Midnight Clear?
When I was a teenager, I started playing the piano for my church regularly. I loved playing at Christmas especially, but I absolutely hated when I had to play It Came Upon a Midnight Clear because it was hard to figure out how to improvise in a beautiful way with the lilting 6/8 meter. Our church also loved to sing this hymn fast, which made it much more difficult.
So when I was composing pieces for the All is Calm, All is Bright collection, I definitely wanted to leave this piece out. But I decided instead to challenge myself to write an arrangement that I could at least live with, maybe even like. So, I composed this arrangement, and I have to admit that now, this is one of my favorite pieces in the All is Calm collection!
