Power-Ups! brings us a truly unique set of inventive and fun pieces from Jason Sifford. This set of 5 late elementary pieces are all based on one letter of the musical alphabet! What Level is “Power-Ups!”?

Power-Ups! is a set of five late elementary piano solos. The pieces vary in their tonal center (A minor, E minor, De minor), but all accidentals are written in. The entire set is carefully edited with pedagogical fingering and articulations, making them excellent teaching or recital pieces. Below are more pedagogical details about each piece in the Power-Ups! set.

Speed-E is in duple meter and has no key signature. This piece features driving, fun to play rhythms in the left-hand, with clever patterns in the right hand. It features many staccato notes and some accent marks making it perfect for reviewing articulations. The biggest interval is a fifth. The smallest note value is a quarter note. There are accidentals in the piece that are part of a pattern that moves by half steps. It’s a speedy, fun piece!

A-Heart is sentimental and lyrical, and is written in common time. Despite having no key signature, the piece (maybe unsurprisingly) revolves around A Major. The only accidentals are C sharp and two instances of F sharp. This piece does contain pedaling, but the instances of lifting the foot appear more sparingly than traditional legato pedaling, making it a perfect introduction for pedaling!

D-stroy! is written in common time. This piece contains many root position triads. It contains easy legato pedaling, and the powerful nature of this piece means there are opportunities to practice playing forte and with expression!

Can’t-C is written in common time. The smallest note value is the eighth note. The largest interval is a third. This piece features many staccato notes, some triads, and a truly clever motive! The left hand holds down treble C while right hand plays around it – making it so right hand “Can’t C!”

G-Force is written in common time, and both hands play in the bass clef. This is shortest piece of the set with the length of one page (18 measures). The smallest note value is the eighth note. The largest interval is a fifth. This piece contains some flats and naturals. There is pedal only at the exciting ending, making this piece perfect for beginning pedalers. G-Force concludes the Power-Ups! set with a fortississimo finale!
