Fans of The “In Beautiful Places” series will love this mature-sounding In the Bleak Midwinter elementary arrangement. This reflective rendition of a beautiful holiday classic evokes the frosty stillness of midwinter. This gives beginning students the opportunity to play an expressive and dynamic piece. Shifting registers add to the look and feel of a piece much more advanced than it really is. In addition, the watercolor cover appeals to teen and adult students who don’t want to play a solo that looks like a kids piece at the holiday recital. This beautiful holiday rendition will be one you don’t have in your holiday stacks, but will use year after year with new students.
What level is In the Bleak Midwinter?
In the Bleak Midwinter elementary is an early level piano arrangement. The smallest note value is a quarter note. The piece is in C Major, and there are no extra accidentals. Pedaling along with helpful fingerings are indicated. Multiple registers are explored, but always with 8va markings so that elementary level students don’t need to read ledger lines they may not know yet.
The student at the elementary level is not always comfortable shifting by one finger. But in this easy In the Bleak Midwinter, any time there is a hand position change of one note, the finger is circled. This helps indicate that it is more than just a helpful finger number reminder – it indicates a finger shift. This gentle reminder will give students confidence and comfortability in shifting out of position, without giving them more than they can be expected to handle during at-home practice.
Bonus recording included!
In the Bleak Midwinter comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.

Elizabeth Hicks-Kimmey –
An excellent easy version of a song that is usually arranged in versions way beyond my ability. I love this song so it was very satisfying to immediately being able to play it!

In the Bleak Midwinter is a beautiful arrangement. One of my level 2 students is playing it in our Christmas recital. A wonderful opportunity to show off her lovely sense of expression. A nice change from our standard Christmas Carols.
