What Level is Fuzzy Pirates?
Fuzzy Pirates is an elementary piano solo that is part of the Adventures of Little Fuzzies series. It is written in D natural minor with no key signature and goes back and forth between D minor position and C Major position. It is written in triple meter. The smallest note value is the quarter note. There are no accidentals. There is no pedaling required. Dynamics, fingering, and articulation are indicated throughout. The largest interval is a fifth.

I have started a “Little Fuzzies Club” in my studio for my youngest students. One is a beginner and the others have had lessons for 1-3 years. Members have a handbook where they put the Little Fuzzies stickers once they’ve completed a piece. Their pictures are on a bulletin board under the title “Little Fuzzies Club”. Because of their interest, I’ve purchased every Little Fuzzies piece that Wendy Stevens has composed. The music has repetitive patterns in most cases but there are challenges they wouldn’t have in beginning lesson books: hand positions that move around the keyboard, music symbols (sharps, flats, naturals), pedal usage, 1st and 2nd endings. Because the lyrics are so engaging and the Fuzzies have humorous adventures all around the house and at different times of the year, students love playing them. Their lesson book pieces have become “too easy” and I’ve been using them for sight reading activities. Having a fun piece to practice motivates my students to go to the piano willingly and share their music with others.

I got one of my 8 year old boys interested in his first Little Fuzzies by showing him the music /picture of the Pirate Fuzzies – he is very engaged and is challenged by the left hand open 5ths and playing R hand/L hand at same time- these pieces grab attention first and then the students are more than willing to work thru the challenging parts because they are determined to play the piece- reading skills are accelerated because the words tell the story- literally every part of learning is brought into play with these pieces- my favorite sentence from students finishing up a piece is them picking out their next Fuzzies piece from all my pics on the wall and exclaiming, “I want to play this one next!”
