Fall Piano Teaching Ideas 2017

Fall is my favorite time of year! And there’s no end to the wonderful fall piano teaching ideas that are out there. You can search for hours on the ComposeCreate site and find lots of ideas, but I want to make it easy for you and just give you links and snippets all in one post!

So here you go…I’ll try to be as thorough as possible so you’ll have plenty of ideas for this year!

Fall piano teaching ideas

  • Get rid of mindless practice with the practice abacus
I’m not a big crafty person (at least any more…I used to be), but I loved making this with my students because it was so immediately useful. They loved it too!
  • 30 and 40 piece challenge charts
We now have certificates for all of these charts and the most recent ones (2016 edition) have editable fields in them so you can type in students’ names for the charts and the certificates.
  • New student interviews – idea for sealing the deal
This was written by a lovely teacher in the ComposeCreate community and she’s so right about how to seal the deal. If you didn’t make the student and parent smile multiple times in the interview, you need this!
  • Fall lesson book bash
We know that there are recitals and festivals coming up that will mean the lesson book might take the back seat. So you can use this to challenge your students to get through as much of their lesson book right now while there is time in the lesson! More on the bash here.
  • Fall sight-reading challenge
If you’ve been around ComposeCreate for a while, you know we have a holiday version of this as well. But fall is a great time to get your students sight-reading more and this is a lovely way to do it and give to those in need. Plus, parents are often willing to “match funds” as well because of the special cause. Let this be an inspiration to you and pick your own cause.
  • The most useful incentive that’s NOT candy
My students have always loved this incentive. And it serves multiple purposes since students can use it to help them learn too!
  • Fall cup tapping news
Here’s some fall, festive things to do with Rhythm Cup Explorations!

All 2017 Fall and Halloween Music Available – New Pieces

We have a number of pieces that are perfect for fall or halloween recitals and some are new to the ComposeCreate store. Some of them are printed music only (no reproductions), some are studio license (as many prints as you need for students you directly teach), and some are sold as either! Here they are:

It’s All About the Candy

When it comes to Halloween, it’s definitely all about the candy. But when it comes to playing the piano at a young age, it’s all about how impressive you sound (at least it is to kids! That’s what It’s All About the Candy is all about…fun, impressive, and WOW! It’s All About the Candy is a studio licensed that comes with 2 versions – to cover all your students opinions!

You Don’t Scare Me Now

You Don’t Scare Me Now will wow the audience with a fun surprise and will make students proud! Need to know more? Visit the You Don’t Scare Me Now product page.

Something in My Piano

Yikes! There’s something in my piano crawling between the keys! Loosely based on a true story…. This early elementary piece lets students slap the keys (as if to kill the spider crawling out from the keys) and uses mostly steps and repeated notes plus easy and fun patterns to move up and down the keyboard for a big sound!
Need to know more? Visit the Something in My Piano product page.

Rite of Fall

The Rite of Fall is perfect for older elementary students. This piece has an intense, Stravinsky-like sound and a number of creepy moments. Staccatos, legatos, accents, and easy shifting meters make this piece very well received by older students or students who want their audience to be intently interested in their piece!
The Rite of Fall only comes as a printed sheet and no reproductions. We also only have a limited number of these in stock! Need more information? Visit The Rite of Fall product page.

The Candy Nabber

Who keep taking all my candy? Why do my favorite chocolate bars keep disappearing, mom? This piece explores the mystery of the Candy Nabber and comes with a frightfully entertaining knocking on the fallboard to represent when the Candy Nabber comes a-knockin’! This piece also has a teacher duet.
The Candy Nabber only comes as a printed sheet with no reproductions permitted. We also only have limited stock of this piece, so be sure to order as many as you think you’ll need! Need to know more? Visit The Candy Nabber product page.

Whirling Shadows

Whirling Shadows is an early intermediate piece that can be used for fall or halloween recitals. The piece is mysterious and compelling and uses lots of pedal. The piece has a contemporary sound that teens especially love and the syncopations between the hands are easily executed and not difficult to count at all.
Whirling Shadows only comes as a printed sheet with no reproductions permitted. Need to know more? Visit the Whirling Shadows product page.

A Scream on Halloween

A Scream on Halloween is an early elementary piece that explores the night you hear a scream! Sneaking soundings and slapping the piano to mimic a scream will delight young students and surprise and entertain their audience! This piece is mostly steps and repeated notes.
A Scream on Halloween only comes as a printed sheet with no reproductions permitted. We also only have limited stock of this piece, so be sure to order as many as you think you’ll need! Need more information? Visit the A Scream on Halloween product page.

Scatterbrained Scarecrow

Scatterbrained Scarecrow is a late elementary piece that sounds a little scattered and kooky! Fun but easy hand crossings make it an entertaining piece to watch as well. Shifting meters give the edge needed to really interest the audience, but the shifting meters are easy to execute as they mostly contain quarter notes.  Eighth notes are the most complicated note values in this piece.
Scatterbrained Scarecrow only comes as a printed sheet with no reproductions permitted. Want more information? Visit the Scatterbrained Scarecrow product page.
