Though piano teaching is where I started, the ComposeCreate® blog is quickly becoming a resource for string teachers, woodwind teachers, classroom music teachers just to name a few. Thank you to all of you instrumental and classroom who have emailed me to tell me what has been helpful to you! With Rhythm Cup Explorations® exploding and helping all kinds of music students, I’ll be working to provide even more resources for instrumental and music classroom teachers.
I want to share a few new music classroom and instrument printables with you. Those of you who teach viola, cello, trombone might especially be interested in these:
- Printable Alto Clef Staff PDF
- Printable Tenor Clef Staff PDF
- Printable Treble Clef Staff PDF – there’s room now to add ledger lines especially for violin, piano, and flute students
- Printable Bass Clef Staff PDF – also room for ledger lines
- Printable Grand Staff PDF
Get all of them by clicking the button below.
How can you use treble clef, bass clef, alto clef and tenor clef printables?
First, print these staff PDFs on 8.5 x 11 paper. Then, laminate them to make the last a long time. Then, find some kid-friendly manipulatives like:
- Hersheys Kisses
- Japanese Erasers
- Tiddlywinks
- Pennies
- Dove chocolates (if you really want to treat your students).
- Magnets (not that they will stay on)
Here are some concepts you can teach and how to teach them either in private lessons or group music lessons:
- Staff Note Names – Say a note out loud and have them put a marker on the appropriate line or space
- Sharps, flats, and naturals – Say a note like “F sharp” out loud and have them mark the appropriate key
- Intervals – Tell them “Place your first marker on C, then your next marker a fifth up from C” or “Use your marker and start on C. Then move up a third, down a fifth, and up a second. Where do you end up?”
- Triads – Make a major triad with your three markers with D as the root
- Scales – If you have lots of markers, you can even have them mark out a major, minor, or other scale

If you are using these in groups, you can ask a few students to stand equally distant from each other and place a call bell in the center of the students. Have the student who completes the assignment first ring the bell! We call it the “bell game!”
Please feel free to share other ideas about how you use these free staff printables! And be sure to tell your teaching friends that they are now available!

Hi, the link seems to be no longer working. I would LOVE to use these printables for a new game with magnetic rocks, they’re the perfect dimension. Is there a way I could get the file?
Hi Macy,
Sorry for the delay in responding. But we have fixed that, so now you should be able to click on the button to then put in your email and we’ll send those Alto and tenor clef staves! Thank you for your patience!
