I was blown away the other day when Tess Orozco sent me an amazing video of “The Bold Escape!”
I thought it was just going to be a wonderful performance of “The Bold Escape”, and so I was excited already. But, when I saw that this was much, much more, I was thrilled.
Please watch this amazing The Bold Escape Music Video that Tess, her student, and her student’s mother created. Then scroll down for some tips from Tess!

Tips from Tess
I asked Tess a few questions about how she created her videos and advice she could give. [Be sure to like her Facebook page so that you can see more of her amazing videos.] Here’s what she said:
What movie making software do you use?
I film my students with my iPhone and then edit the videos on iMovie on my MacBook. iMovie is a great program with a lot of options for visual and audio effects, and it’s also relatively user-friendly and has been a good foundation for learning how to create studio videos. Now that the students’ and my ideas for movies are becoming bigger and more imaginative, I’ve started looking for more advanced editing programs. Bonus: it’s tax-deductible!
What would you say to teachers who are a little scared of doing this?
My first videos were very simple — I just turned on the camera while a student played a piece, and I’m so glad to have the old footage years later. There are plenty of easy-to-master editing programs available, so start by filming a student playing (make sure you get permission!), and the fancy effects can come later.
Studio videos have been an incredible motivator for students to learn their music. I have both a YouTube and Facebook account where I share our work, and some videos have gotten 4,000+ views which makes the student feel amazing. I’ve shared videos from recitals, duets, group lessons. Some videos focus on an idea like “how to compose from your surroundings” or “what is it like for a teenage boy to play a traditionally feminine piece” while others take us on a journey through a student’s original composition or creative interpretation of a piece, like “The Bold Escape.” What I love most is there will never be a shortage of inspiration or a fear of copying someone else’s idea because each video can be unique to each individual musician.
“My Students Feel Like Concert Pianists!”
That’s what Melissa Willis, another wonderful teacher, says about this piece and it’s definitely the answer to the question at the top of the page, “Why do students like this piece so much?” Here is what other teachers are saying about why students like “The Bold Escape:”
“The Bold Escape” has engaged so many different students in my studio: they love it! It’s helped perk up beginners, transfer students, student struggling in not reading, intervallic students, and advancing students who just needed an easy sight-reading piece or a bit of fun added to their week.
Thank you so much for this piece. It has been a huge hit with my students.
The Bold Escape has my beginners feeling like they are concert pianists. What a genius piece of music!
If You’d Like to Purchase “The Bold Escape:”
You can purchase it below or view The Bold Escape Page for even more details. Your beginning students won’t believe how amazing they can sound with this piece! And you’ll feel great about how comfortable they become moving around the piano.

Oh Wendy, this is such a beautifully precious performance video that you posted. I, too, thought it was going to be an
outstanding performance of “The Bold Escape”. It is! But, it is also SO, SO, SO MUCH MORE! CONGRATULATIONS to Tess, and her student and to you, the composer.
I had never thought of adding video like this. I want to learn how to do it. Thank you very much for sharing this with us.

Love, Love, Love!!!
I really loved what Tess, her student and mother did! It was beautiful! I would like to know how Tess went about to teach her student how to compose..
Hi Janice,
This piece is actually one that I’ve written that’s quite popular. It’s called The Bold Escape. It’s the video story and acting part that is what Tess and her teacher did. I hope that helps clarify it!
