FREE Holiday Tune Flashcards!

Holiday Tune Flashcards are the perfect way to:

  • Mix up theory during the holidays

What Tunes Are Included?

Here’s a list of the melodies you’ll find on the Holiday Tune Flashcards. These are all public domain tunes, and students will likely know most (if not all!) of these:

  • Angels We Have Heard On High
  • We Three Kings
  • Go Tell It On the Mountain
  • O Come All Ye Faithful
  • God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
  • Silent Night
  • O Christmas Tree
  • It came Upon A Midnight Clear
  • Joy to the World
  • Jingle Bells
  • O Come O Come Emmanuel
  • O Holy Night
  • What Child Is This
  • The Twelve Days of Christmas
  • Away In A Manger
Go Tell It On the Mountain and O Come All Ye Faithful – melodies with easy rhythm/note values
O Come O Come Emmanuel and O Holy Night – melodies with more difficult note values.

How Can I Use These Flashcards?

The list below is definitely not exhaustive, and we would love to hear how you plan to use them in the comments! But here are just a few ways you can use these Holiday Tune Flashcards, for both private lessons and group/classroom settings:

  • Time’s up! – Allow each student at their private lesson 1 minute to name as many of the tunes as they can. They can pass a tune as well if they get stuck. At the end of the week, give a prize to the student or several students who named the tunes the most quickly.
  • Transposition – Have students transpose these tunes into different keys. Using a piece students already know can be helpful for students new to transposing, as they’ll be able to tell easily whether they’ve played intervals correctly.
  • Holiday Who Am I? – Have two students tape a flashcard on their head. Students need to figure out what the tune is on the other students head. Whoever figures it out first is the winner!
  • Theory Review – Reviewing before a holiday break is just as important as reviewing after! Use these flashcards to have students identify intervals, key or time signature, note values, note names, and more!
  • Harmonization Challenge – Give your student a flashcard and ask them to harmonize the piece with traditional harmony. Challenge them to do it a second time with different chords!
  • Sight Singing Challenge – Give the student the starting pitch (or even play the key/mode they’ll be singing in and then give the pitch), and ask them to try and sing the melody out loud. You can give them a hint – “this is a holiday tune”, or “this tune is about Christmas bells”, etc.

Have you used these cards or game with traditional carols and tunes in your studio? We’d love to hear your ideas!
