A few years ago, I had a studio full of really wonderful, intermediate and late intermediate students. That was all well and good until I started picking recital music and found that my own child would sound like a baby if I made him play some of the elementary pieces I was looking at.
We just so happened to be reading a great book together and there was a wonderful scene at the end in which the 3 children in the book were narrowly escaping their enemies, “The Fangs of Dang” on the back of their larger than life dog, Nugget. I was inspired by this scene and wrote “The Bold Escape” which made my elementary son sound absolutely amazing at the recital!Â
The Bold Escape
Your beginning students want to sound as big and mature as your other students and there’s no reason that can’t be the case with this huge sounding piece! Inspired by a kid’s suspenseful adventure book called, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, this piece uses all of the piano (in patterns that can be taught by rote), one easy pedal, and C position.
Your beginning students won’t believe how amazing they can sound with this piece! And you’ll feel great about how comfortable they become moving around the piano.

I bought your Amazing Grace for my students taking lessons this summer and they absolutely loved it. I’m always looking for sacred music. The later beginners felt proud that they could play something that sounded more difficult than it was, and the early intermediates liked it because they could play it well after only a few practices. Thank you for this great arrangement!
