Scooch on Over is a fun, ragtime piece for the student or the teacher! This tune will have toes tappin’ and smiles happening for whoever hears the piece. This ragtime piece is especially suitable for the student who has small hands or who can’t play octaves very well. It’s fun and falls easily under the hands!

Level of Scooch on Over

Scooch on Over is a late intermediate piece. The smallest note value is the eighth note, but the level is primarily due to the movement of the left hand and the amount of moving and chromaticism in both hands.

The piece is carefully fingered to help pianists execute the intricate chromatic passages which occur in the key of C Major.

Thoughts from the Composer…

I have great respect for the musicians who made ragtime come alive. But it’s just never been my favorite style of music. So I decided to challenge myself to write a rag that I liked and could really enjoy playing. I also have very small hands, so traditional rags that have long passages of right hand octaves are never enjoyable for me and often make my hand hurt. I wanted to write a rag that I could not only enjoy the sound of, but I could also play with joy instead of pain.

Scooch on Over is the result and I love it! I hope you do too.

A great piece for small hands. I plan to learn to play it well and then introduce to students as they become ready to play ragtime music.

  2. Sandi Bowen

I’m not a huge fan of ragtime, but “Scooch On Over” captivated me. Wonderful bluesy feel. My kids are going to love these!
