A Loose Tooth is a big milestone for a kid, so this piece is a fun celebration for all children. It’s a funny little conversation between a child and his or her tooth. The catchy tune is repeated several times giving kid instant success and feelings of accomplishment.
The Level of Loose Tooth
Loose Tooth is early to mid elementary. The shortest note value is the quarter note. There are staccato and legato phrases in this piece. There are two flats in the piece, but these are written in the music. There is no pedaling.
The main motive is repeated numerous times in the piece, making it quite easy to learn. Fingering and articulations are carefully notated to give students the details they need to be successful.
Music From a Child’s Perspective
So much of the time, kids hear things from adults’ perspectives, so you will find that they love music written from their perspective. Loose Tooth does a fantastic job of “speaking the language” of a child. Kids will love it!

I have several students in that losing teeth stage so this song was a real hit with them.

I purchased this piece with my grandson in mind, who lost both front teeth recently. He was delighted with it, and is playing it constantly.

You might not think that children notice the words in piano solos, but they do! Loose Tooth’s topic capitalizes on one of life’s challenges to which all elementary students can relate. The piece is repetitive enough to make the musical challenge less daunting, but interesting enough to make it pedagogically worthy of their investment. I loved the l-o-o-o-n-g tie, musical-enticement, that mimics a stubborn tooth!

Loose Tooth is an adorable piece! It’s so great to have it hand, because I’m always prepared when one of my students shows up with a loose tooth. Recently, one child lost her tooth DURING our Zoom class! Thanks to Wendy, I was prepared! My student pulled out her tooth and I pulled out Loose Tooth and we both had a blast!

Such a wonderful little piece! One student said, “This song is about me!”

Perfect for my young elementary-age students! They love it!

My studio loves Loose Tooth. I pull it out any time a student mentions they’ve lost a tooth, and the fun syncopated rhythm pattern is such a big hit. I love that it’s all steps and skips so it’s super accessible for my beginners, and they love the grown up jazzy sound and the feeling of accomplishment that comes from playing such a long song.

OMG!! I am giving all my snaggled tooth students this piece and they give me the biggest gaping smile when they hear it played and sang!! One of my 6 year olds came back the very next week playing it perfectly and singing every word too! WOW- this piece makes students so happy because it’s all about what’s personal to their lives- thanks Wendy- your pieces are vital to my studio’s success and student retention because my students love playing your music👏👍
