A lonely figure in a trench coat and fedora can barely be seen in the dark alley…. This Low Five jazz solo unfolds with a slinky spy swing that paints the mysterious scene. The groove in this minor jazz solo is smooth as silk and accompanies a spooky jazz melody that is simple and compelling.
This is Piece #3 in the Swing ‘n Sizzle collection by Jeremy Siskind.
What Level is Low Five?
Low Five is late intermediate level and is composed in the key of D Minor. The piece is written in 5/4 and only switches to one measure of 6/4 in a few places. The smallest note value is the eighth note. Pianists only pedal in a few notated places. Phrasing, dynamics, and helpful fingering are all included, making this an excelling teaching piece especially for asymmetrical meter.

Marie –
I have been teaching Low Five to 2 teenage boys who enjoy learning jazz songs. They will enjoy the other ones too, but we started with Low Five. I enjoy playing all of the jazz pieces. They are good to teach more advanced rhythms.
Nancy –
My jazz-loving intermediate student loves this piece. She found the QR code very helpful for learning trickier passages. This tune just grows on you – it’s so much fun, and not too difficult, but just challenging enough, for an intermediate student who has played other pedagogical jazz pieces.
Graciela –
For students who likes Jazz pieces, this song is great!
Sue –
My adult students will be working on this series! Can’t wait to get started.
