The Birds and Bugs set of Short Sheets® are fun little pieces about small critters. Several are peppy and one is particularly beautiful and serene, so they are a great study in different articulations and styles. These pieces are in G position, but do not have eighth notes, so they are excellent pieces for introducing G position without the complexity of new rhythms.
Included are these one-page pieces:
- Quit Buggin’ Me!
- Soaring High
- Stirring Up the Nest
What Level is Birds and Bugs?
The pieces in Birds and Bugs mid elementary. All of them are in G position. Some sharps, flats, and naturals are used. The smallest note value is the quarter note. One piece, Soaring High uses syncopated pedal just a few times.
The pieces in Birds and Bugs are carefully fingered and edited to help ensure success, even if you are teaching remotely. A few additional fingerings are added to make these especially effective for teaching students who struggle with note reading.
What are Short Sheets®?
Short Sheets® are collections of 3 one page pieces to help motivate your busy students who need to learn music quickly. These sets of one pages pieces (including this Birds and Bugs collection) are excellent for:
- Online lessons (they are easy to teach)
- Summer lessons (they are fun and don’t take as much time to learn
- Sight reading
- Students with short attention spans,
- Young students who are afraid of lengthy pieces (you’d be surprised at how many of your student balk at 2 page pieces)
- Busy students (isn’t that all students these days?)
- Students who want to learn an awesome piece of music quickly
And as a teacher, you’ll love Short Sheets® because you know that the more music students learn, the better their sight-reading skills!
Are there bonuses to Birds and Bugs?
Yes, even though the price of these 3 pieces is incredibly low (you can use these over and over again with any student you directly teach) we still are including bonus mp3 performances of the Space Adventures pieces with your purchase. You are permitted to send these example performance tracks to your students to help them learn the piece.
What is the Studio License?
Birds and Bugs is delivered digitally (through your email receipt) and is studio licensed. This means that you can print and use this for any student that you directly teach for your entire lifetime of teaching. It’s like getting an unlimited supply of Music Kids Love®!

I have three elementary students playing the Birds and Bugs short sheets. They are enjoying them immensely. What child doesn’t have a sibling to play “Quit Buggin’Me!” to? As their teacher I like the 2-note slur review as well the half-step conversation this short piece brings. “Soaring High” is legato with 4-measure phrases. The ending is very “Wendy” with a beautiful open 5th pattern that covers the keyboard. “Stirring Up the Nest” is also loved by the students with a good articulation review for me. The audio samples aide in the learning also. I post them on Tonara, and the kids learn very quickly.

I love Short Sheets and my students do as well. They are the best musical treat! QUIT BUGGIN’ ME is a hit for students with siblings. They can hear the “bickering” in the interaction between right and left hands. Brilliant! SOARING HIGH is beautiful and truly flies away in its final notes. Lovely! STIRRING UP THE NEST creates another wonderful opportunity to create a fabulous musical story of life in the nest. Clever!

I’m doing a “Wild About Music” Showcase for my students, and these are perfect. I have 3 different students each playing one for the showcase. These are engaging and fun and the perfect showy piece to add so each student has more than one piece ready. I have a feeling each student will want to complete the set once the Showcase is over. I am a fan of all the Short Sheets I’ve tried. I was happy to expand my collection with these!
