This Name That Holiday Tune is Educational Too!
This Name That Holiday Tune game is fun AND educational, which is important for group lessons and piano parties. This game will challenge your students not only name the tune, but also help them:
- Identify the meter
- Identify the first interval
- Identify the mode (major and minor)
- Describe the tempo (do they really remember those tempo terms?)
Let me just be honest with you. Name that Holiday Tune is fun, but not nearly as fun and educational as Holiday Rhythm Cup Explorations, so be sure to use this “Name That Holiday Tune” as a filler only if you need it.
How to Play Name That Holiday Tune
- Divide students into two or more teams.
- Give each team the Name That Holiday Tune Game Page (download below).
- Ask students to answer the questions on the Name That Holiday Tune Game Page. They’ll need to work together as a team and whisper to discuss their answers!
- Use the list of holiday tunes in the game and play an excerpt of the tune. If you are not good at playing by ear, just pull out a Christmas book from which to play (but make sure students can’t see your music).
- Award points for each team based on how many of the questions they answer correctly.
- The team with the most points at the end of the game wins (I would recommend setting a time limit – 10 -15 minutes is usually good or play until the end of your lesson because this is just a filler, remember?).
White Paper is Boring! Use this pretty template!
Sure, you can just use white paper and write the questions on the board. But that’s not nearly as fun and is twice as much work! So, today you can download the pretty template to impress your students. Go ahead and use your laminator which I know you love! 😉 [There’s something fun about laminating…haven’t figured out what it is yet though!] Then, your students will be able to use a white board marker to write their answers and then they can erase for the next tune. That’ll save tons of paper!
