It’s always challenging to start an older student at the beginning. It seems like a natural place to start. But the older and more mature student is already so accomplished at many things, that starting at the beginning can feel embarrassing and even insulting to them.
They have so much life experience in writing, speaking, studying, and learning things, that going back to square one isn’t actually fair to the student.
Let’s face it. Adults and teens already know how to recognize the 3 black keys. They already know how to keep a steady beat. They can see that some notes move up and some move down. There’s no need to belabor these points with them like most method books do.

Older Students Need Sophisticated Music Immediately!
But, from the first lesson, adults can and they should have music that connects with them and sounds mature. And while this may sound impossible given that they don’t know much about reading or playing, we’re excited to prove that it really IS possible with a new series of sophisticated Rote and Reading® piano music.
Why Would Adults Need Rote and Reading® Piano Music?
First, just like children, adults can play more complicated music than they can read. That’s why Rote and Reading® piano music is so important even for adults as they are learning to play the piano. And sophisticated Rote and Reading® piano music is the key. Letting their fingers play beautiful music without being tied to the difficult task of reading, is helpful in motivating them and developing their dexterity, which is often lacking in adult students.
Thus, playing a beautiful motive for them, and showing it to them on the score, then dialoging with them about whether it repeats, moves, changes, varies, etc. can help them in significant ways like:
- It helps them focus on the difficult fine motor skill that they often lack.
- It keeps their brain for being overloaded since they aren’t reading every single note and trying to interpret what it means for their fingers.
- It helps them enjoy practicing since they can focus more on the sound.
- Studying the score periodically (instead of for every note) helps them learn to read in a more enjoyable, musical way.
- Sophisticated Rote and Reading® piano music helps them stay with lessons longer because they play more complicated, beautiful sounding music from the start!
Does Rote and Reading® Piano Music for Adults and Teens Exist?
Teachers who have been using Rote and Reading® music already know about its benefits and because of that, they’ve been asking for Rote and Reading® piano music that appeals to teens and adults! We’ve had just a few pieces that do that like Savannah Stalk, Vancouver Island Sunset, and River Dolphins.
But we’ve now created a new series of music that is specifically designed to be sophisticated Rote and Reading® piano music for teens and adults!
Introducing:
A Colorful, Sophisticated Rote and Reading® Piano Music Series
This music is, put simply, beautiful. It’s something I even love to play! It’s simple, but sophisticated, featuring beautiful patterns and melodies that adults can learn by Rote, Reading, or most effectively as a combination of both Rote and Reading®. Listen to any of these and you’ll see what I mean:
Here are each of these Rote and Reading® pieces plus a bundle with a big discount!
How Do I Teach by Rote and Reading®?
This is a great question and not one we are going to cover here. However, when things settle a bit, it’s a topic we’d like to cover in a webinar. If you are interested in learning more about how to teach by Rote and Reading®, please leave a comment below!
And then please also let me know what you think in general about the concept. Have you tried any Rote and Reading® with older students?

I would love to hear your thoughts on how to teach rote and reading
I am very interested in learning how to teach rote. I have a student in her sixties who has terrible hand position. I seem to have cured the hand position in her last lesson, but I would like to teach her some rote repertoire so that she can focus on playing and technique without also having to read. I have some Piano Safari books, but the rote pieces are too simple. The three pieces you have here are beautiful, and can be played in sequence to create one song with multiple parts.
Would it be possible to create rote pieces that include more intervals? Even chords? What are your thoughts about that?
Thank you for your comments and questions, Sarah! We do have some pieces that are Rote and Reading® and more difficult. I think you’ll really like this one:
