This reverent and mature-sounding arrangement of When I Survey the Wondrous Cross allows elementary-level students to explore expressive and artistic playing. Pianists of all ages will sound mature while still playing at their level.
Students will also appreciate the simple hand crossings throughout the piece, which makes students feel more advanced. The piece also sounds more advanced thanks to playing in different registers, but always with repeating patterns that students will feel comfortable playing.
The Level of When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an elementary level arrangement. The smallest note value is a quarter note, and is written in 4/4. There are helpful finger numbers written in throughout the piece, as well as pedaling clearly notated.
This piece fits well under small hands, and the right hand never leaves C position (though sometimes in a different register). There is a brief part of the B section that moves to a minor with a simple left hand minor chord.

A student of mine played “When I survey” in church this weekend. It was so great for a beginning student to be able to play a full sounding piece. Everyone was impressed. Thanks for your work! I love it when beginners sound so accomplished with your pieces!

I purchased a few of the Easter hymns from the webinar you had a little while ago. My students are really enjoying this music, I must say! I have one boy from Georgia who so loves When I Survey…that this was his 1st choice for an adjudication piece for our Spring Festival Adjudication! I just thought that was really special!

This piece is such a beautiful arrangement of a favorite song. I have several students who are enjoying learning this piece and I have even played it myself as part of the prelude for our services. It makes for a quick easy piece for the late elementary student but is very accessible for mid elementary as well. Well done!

This is really a beautiful arrangement of this meditation on the cross of Christ. I have an adult student who requires a sophisticated sound, but is unable to play intermediate music as of yet. Wendy’s elementary level music is satisfying to her, and she’s really enjoying this piece for the Easter season.

A young teen student of mine was so delighted to learn “When I Survey”. She enjoys hymns but they are technically difficult for her. She was especially delighted that the lyrics were included. This piece is beautiful and can be played by anyone.

I’m anxious to try this on my Elem./Int. students. Loved the simplicity of the piece.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. Both adult students enjoyed playing this. It is satisfying because of the pretty intro and coda you added to the hymn. Also, it gives them plenty of time to change chords and they are held two measures at a time. It is a lovely arrangement with hand crossings and octaves changing to give them some technic features to accomplish without too much difficulty. Thank you for this.

I simply love this arrangement for my own sake! I will soon be passing it along to my students. In the meantime, I am playing it, singing it, praying it before each counseling session I do. On one occasion I played it for my counselee to reframe her anxious state of mind at the beginning of one of our sessions, as I counsel in my lovely piano studio space. Thank you!
