As you sit near Lawson’s Lake, the soothing symphony of croaking frogs blends with a gentle chirping of birds. As the sun descends, its gold and pink hues cast a mesmerizing reflection upon the still waters.
This beautiful piece captures a wistful longing with which teens and adults will identify readily. Younger students will also enjoy playing such deep and mature sounds in an elementary level piece.
What level is Near Lawson’s Lake?
Near Lawson’s Lake is mid elementary and is written in C Major. The largest interval is a fifth and students will become quite comfortable moving their left hand around the deep fifths in the bass. The right hand begins in a C position and has subtle shifts throughout. But each of these shifts is highlighted by a circled finger number which will help the student find their new position easily and quickly.
The smallest note value in Near Lawson’s Lake is the quarter note. There is a D.S. al Coda. Pedaling is notated throughout so students do not need to remember to “pedal every measure” or with the harmony.
Bonus recording included!
Near Lawson’s Lake comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.
Plus, a QR code is included on the first page of the PDF (not pictured in the sample) so students can scan the code and it will take them directly to the performance recording of the piece. This can help them be inspired and learn the piece even more effectively without you having to send the mp3 to them!

It was easy to be drawn in by the stunning cover art and intriguing title but the music itself is the star! The melody floats over manageable intervals and is accompanied by rich 5ths. The use of the damper pedal creates a wonderfully “watery” effect. Even my “I-don’t-want-to-learn-a-new-song–especially-if-I-have-to-move-my-hands” student can’t stop playing this. Beauty!
