You Can’t Take My Power Away helps kids and teens express what they’ve lost during this pandemic. But it also projects the strength that kids and teens and adults have found. Strength to power through. Strength to find hope. Strength to live in the midst of difficult circumstances.
We’ve all lost a lot during this time and it’s important not to forget the losses our kids and teens have and continue to experience. You Can’t Take My Power Away can help them express their emotions and find their own strength and power.
What Level is You Can’t Take My Power Away?
You Can’t Take My Strength Away is late elementary to early intermediate. The piece is in C major. There is only one place where there is a single pedal marking. The prevalent rhythm of the music is set immediately and continues fairly consistently through the piece. The smallest note value is the eighth note and there are a number of syncopations but again, they are set early in the piece and are fairly consistent throughout.
The piece falls easily under the hands, even small hands.

We loved it. Very powerful! My students silently engaged in this piece. Not discussing it per se but playing it and singing it. And, all the while, I felt I had given them voice to something difficult to discuss and so this piece was therefore healing and hopeful. The power of music! Thanks Wendy!

a beautiful piece of music, that hits the spot with my young teens. We have been working on the idea of using their music/piano to help lessen the stress that builds up. Thank you for this beautiful piece with empowering words.
