“Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet!” takes the silliest Halloween phrase that every kid loves, and turns it into a fun piece! While about monsters, the piece is all fun – these monsters are just after some candy. There are some wonderful opportunities to practice concepts that students at this level may still be working on (like 3/4 time and crossovers), but with such a fun piece students will look forward to the practice!
What level is Trick or Treat Smell My Feet?
Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet is an Elementary level piece. The intro and ending to the piece is in 3/4 and the verse and chorus is in 4/4. The piece is in d minor with chromatic inflections. All accidentals are notated. There are several crossovers throughout the piece, and these sections can be taught by rote if students are still learning to read the notes on the staff.
Pedaling is written in for the intro and ending which use the pedal. The smallest note value is a quarter note. Dynamic markings and articulations are indicated throughout, making it a good teaching piece. The covers features the same creepy monster limbs as “Play Ball?” and “Leave the Monster Scene to Us”, so students who have loved those pieces will be sure to love this one as well!
Bonus recording included!
Trick or Treat Smell My Feet comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.
As with all our music, also included is this fun cover!

Fun, catchy, and fit easily under the hands. My student loves the amusing lyrics, and enjoys the climbing spooky pattern that builds the anticipation. Great song, and includes good challenges (like changing octaves quickly) in a seamless way.

“Trick or Treat Smell My Feet” was an instant hit with all ages of my students. This piece makes beginners sound very accomplished, and the more advanced students like having something fun to play – they all laugh at the lyrics. We always have fun with this piece.

Beady Eyes and Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet are also hits from the autumn collection that will be performed at the Halloween recital from this collection.

I was hesitant about “taking the time” in lessons for Halloween/Autumn music, but my students’ reactions to their new, fun pieces changed my mind! “Trick or Treat, Smell my Feet” got a lot of giggles from my students, most of whom proceeded to say the entire rhyme (they all new different versions). The autumn bundle really has made October fun at my studio.
