This set of ComposeCreate® Tricks and Treats Short Sheets® features 3 one-page piano solos for your early to mid elementary piano students. These pieces are very simple – what you would give to a student who has just started to read music on the white keys or who wants fun review music.
This Tricks and Treats set can be used for Halloween music or even for students who just want to celebrate the fall. No mention of Halloween or trick or treating is in the lyrics. The piece titles are:
- Pumpkin
- Candy Corn
- Black Cat
What Level is Tricks and Treats?
The pieces in Tricks and Treats are early to mid elementary. The smallest rhythm value is the quarter note and quarter rest. The notes move mostly by steps with an occasional skip. A few of the pieces have some easy intervals in them. All pieces are carefully edited with appropriate fingerings, articulations, and dynamic markings to be solid piano pedagogy material.
What are Short Sheets®?
Short Sheets® are collections of 3 one page pieces to help motivate your busy students who need to learn music quickly. These sets of one pages pieces (including this Summer Fun collection) are excellent for:
- Online lessons (they are easy to teach)
- Summer lessons (they are fun and don’t take as much time to learn
- Sight reading
- Students with short attention spans,
- Young students who are afraid of lengthy pieces (you’d be surprised at how many of your student balk at 2 page pieces)
- Busy students (isn’t that all students these days?)
- Students who want to learn an awesome piece of music quickly
And as a teacher, you’ll love Short Sheets® because you know that the more music students learn, the better their sight-reading skills!
Are there bonuses to Tricks and Treats?
Yes, even though the price of these 3 pieces is incredibly low (see more under “What is the studio license?” below) we still are including bonus mp3 performances of the Tricks and Treats pieces with your purchase. You are permitted to send these example performance tracks to your students to help them learn the piece.
What is the Studio License?
This set of pieces is delivered digitally (through your email receipt) and is studio licensed. This means that you can print and use this for any student that you directly teach for your entire lifetime of teaching. It’s like getting an unlimited supply of Music Kids Love®!

I have new online students this fall, and several parents are so impressed and appreciative at the ease of me sending the PDFs!
I used this packet in 4 lessons already this week, and “Black Cat” has been the elementary student favorite! No eighth notes or ledger lines, and just one little sharp- but I love pointing out that the BLACK note is in “BLACK Cat.”
Nina DeKock –
I am teaching online lessons and these ‘Short Sheets’ are great to work with! I have given these songs from Tricks and Treats to several students and they are really enjoying them. Bite sized pieces of ‘candy’. 🙂
Betsy Breaker –
These short sheets have been a great addition to lessons this fall. Students could quickly analyze and learn the motifs within the songs and most were learned within one (or for sure two) weeks. A great boost to to get lessons off and running (online) this fall!
Laura Dickey –
Delightful little pieces that are especially easy to teach to the young ones online. The older kids like them too- several have already memorized a piece or two just for fun!
Megan Hughes –
I’ve always yearned for more short, patterned pieces that can be taught rote-ish, note-ish , depending on a student’s reading skill. All these short sheets fill the gap exactly. Of course, their inherent musical attractiveness is the best part. I don’t have to pretend to like them.
Tina Carter –
I used these Tricks and Treats short sheets with all my beginning students this fall –they loved them! It’s great to have these short sheets for seasonal music when students have a limited time to learn and enjoy them. They fit in the hand well and are easy to teach and learn with their patterns. The students chose to perform them at our October Group Lessons.
Nancy Rath –
Another great “short sheet” from Wendy and Compose Create. The students love these quick, easy-to-learn pieces and they don’t even know that they’re working on important skills while having fun. Candy Corn was the clear favorite in the studio !! Thanks, Wendy, for adding so much to the fall season with my students !!
Jana Jaudon –
My students and I love Wendy’s music! For the last few weeks I have used “Tricks and Treats – Short Sheets” with a 9 year-old girl who loves to sing. She played and sang her heart out. These are great, catchy tunes and make for a fun holiday treat!
Pat King –
My student did a great job playing “Candy Corn” at our Fall Workshop. She also learned another piece but chose “Candy Corn. I really like the short sheets.
Kathy Cupp –
My young students and I enjoy Tricks and Treats Short Sheets because they have simple melodies and fun lyrics.
It is encouraging to both the student and myself when a new song is mastered in one lesson and ready to take home for review!
Christie Davis –
I am loving all the Short Sheets! It has been such a huge help for teaching online and sending the PDF’s to my families. The kids, and I have really enjoyed Tricks and Treats with the easy hand positions, many repetitive patterns making them easy to learn, and cute lyrics. They have really enjoyed Black Cat when they figure out how easy changing octaves is. Great set for Fall!
Sharon –
My fourth grade student who is in her second year just loved all three short sheets! She felt as though she accomplished so much in a short amount of time. We even recorded them for our private Facebook group!
Carol –
Candy Corn is awesome!!! The repeating patterns make it easy for students to learn quickly. I love the part, “I don’t know when”; it’s the perfect song for this favorite Halloween treat!
kathleen –
These were life savers and in at least one case, a student saver. Very catchy and inspiring little pieces that are easily within the reach of early elementary students. Loved these!
Emily J Ihasz –
I love the Short Sheets! They are just the right size for my students that are not able to keep up the practice elbow grease necessary to finish a longer piece. Students really like that positive feedback in the beginning and these really deliver. They are great to build musical self esteem!
Lorna Kujanpaa –
The Tricks and Treats short sheets came at the perfect time for my beginners who needed a little extra fun piece to add to their assignments in October! Being able to send them electronically was SO helpful! Another favorite has been “Watch Out, Here I Come!”…the knocking beats are everyone’s favorite!
Vanesa Read –
Candy Corn is a favorite from this series. My elementary students are thrilled that they can play this so quickly. They also enjoy singing the words.
Deanna –
I used this Short Sheets collection with my newer reader-students. They had fun learning these simple pieces just before Halloween. Lots of fun!
Kerri Sox –
These are perfect. They’re great for beginners wanting fun Halloween songs, and they’re awesome sightreading practice for older kids. See if they can get all of the octave jumps on their first try! Fantastic as usual, Wendy. Thank you!
Heidi Mayer –
What is so impressive about Wendy Stevens’ compositions is that she always manages to make them sound fresh and unique. My students’ imaginations are always activated while working on Wendy’s pieces, and these had the added bonus of being short and easy to grasp. Thank you, Wendy!
Vanesa –
‘Candy Corn’ is a favorite. My elementary students are thrilled that
they can play this so quickly. They also enjoy singing the words.
Nathalie –
Even without words the pieces work well. Most of my students do not know any English yet – especially when they still attend primary school. However, a young student of mine played “Pumpkin” and it immediately became a favorite – the music alone did it.
Pat –
I just had a student tell me today that your short sheet “Pumpkin” is her favorite piece and she loves to play it every day. 🙂
Kathleen –
My early beginners are loving Ghastly Beast, Candy Corn, and Pumpkin. So thank you for these…very motivating!
