Have you ever been obsessed with finding out how many treats you can amass during trick-or-treating? How far would you go to get oh, say, eighteen thousand treats while trick-or-treating?!
Top Dog is a funny and energetic solo about a dog just a little too concerned with getting into the fun spirit of trick-or-treating – you could say he was obsessed!
What level is Top Dog?
Top Dog is an elementary level piece. The tonality of the piece is in A minor, with regularly appearing G-sharps, plus other accidentals to give chromatic flavor to the piece. This piece has fun articulations like staccato and accent marks, and dynamics. The smallest note value is a quarter note, the largest is a whole note, and ties in the left hand.
The registers of this piece change in predictable ways, whether going up one octave, down one octaves, or in one instance, up two octaves, with a “15ma” marking. It’s a great piece to get your students moving all over the keyboard! The cover features a cute golden retriever dog that reflects the graphic design of our popular Pet Shop series!
Bonus recording included!
Top Dog comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.
As with all our music, the fun cover is also included!
What is the Studio License?
Top Dog is delivered digitally (through your email receipt) and is studio licensed. This means that you can print and use this for any student that you directly teach for your entire lifetime of teaching.

Kathy –
I am working on this with a student right now, and it is such a hit! When I played & sang it to her for the first time, she laughed out loud and said, “I want to play that!”. I think this will appeal to so many kids who have dogs, and of course any kid who goes trick-or-treating and has that ‘how much candy did I score tonight?!” glint in their eye. A winner!

My students in the studio have really enjoyed working on: Top Dog, Leaf Surfing, Autumn’s Awakening, Autumn Glow, Hay Ride, Falling to New. We will be starting both versions of Over the River and Through the Woods, Deck the Halls, Sledding Shenanigans, and likely some others from the past. The students really enjoy working on your music. They find it easy to read, enjoy the colorful title pages, and older ones are using the QR codes as well.
