This energetic and fun solo with teacher duet will have your students feeling the tango beat in their body! Tangos are inherently fun, but aren’t typically written for the elementary level student. Thanks to a teacher duet and clever use of only half and quarter notes for the student part, Tangy Tango has already been a favorite for festivals and recitals. You can easily imagine the citrus fruits on the cover of the piece dramatically dancing, dipping, and twirling around the room – a picture your students will love painting with their playing!
The Level of Tangy Tango
Tangy Tango is an elementary level piece. It’s written in a minor, and there are no accidentals. It is easy to read thanks to all quarter and half notes. Helpful fingerings are written throughout. Both hands stay in the same position throughout the piece, making it perfect for recitals or festivals for students who feel nervous about changing hand position. There is no pedaling in Tangy Tango, and dynamic markings are written throughout. The largest intervalic jump within one hand is a third, making this solo very accessible to beginning students are just beginning to read on the staff.
A teacher duet which includes suggested fingering is included at the bottom of each page.
Bonus mp3 Recording:

Melody Dean –
Tangy Tango creates a rare opportunity for first year pianists to feel powerful and express themselves musically with intensity. This piece includes rests in a way students can feel the rhythm and grow their skills.
I immediately fell in love with Tangy Tango because of the dramatic mood and minor energy made easy for my early staff reading level pianists.
I first discovered Tangy Tango on the elementary playing level list of a local music competition. I’m thrilled to now own a studio license for Tangy Tango so I can use this piece with new students over and over again!

Tangy Tango has been my go to piece this year with all levels of students. Even more advanced students are initially a bit challenged by the tango rhythm. Or I give them the teacher’s part of the duet. I don’t do a lot of duets, so having the teacher part has been a great opportunity to have fun playing along with my students. This been a winner for me

My students just love Wendy’s music! They call them “special songs” and are always excited to get a new one. Tangy Tango is very playful and sounds harder than it is. It’s a winner!

An energetic piece accessible to small hands and in a small range! I love the sassy teacher part — it adds a fabulous flair!!!

I purchased Tangy Tango for a 7th grade boy who just began piano lessons this school year. He already plays violin but had no background in piano. He loved Tangy Tango and said he likes the catchy rhythm. I could tell immediately he was having a lot of fun playing it. I’m sure I will be pulling out Tangy Tango for almost every one of my elementary piano students in the future!

Tangy Tango is perfect for a few of my students that practice inconsistently. It’s a flashier piece than what’s in their method books, and teaches them good counting skills with the rhythmic patterns. It sounds really professional to them when they play it as a duet.

This has been wonderful for my older beginners, especially boys. They love the beat. I have a digital piano, so we orchestrate it with tango instruments and rhythms and play in cut time. Really fun for 10 – 13 year old beginners.

I only teach adults and I use easy music or music that emphasizes some particular aspect such as rhythm in easy children’s pieces. I thought Tangy Tango would be a good rhythmic piece for teaching the rhythm of the Tango. And, it is!
Wendy Stevens is so creative and talented. She understands children and how they learn. I wish she had been around when I taught younger students. Her webinars are very lively and offer so many great ideas. I was impressed with the reaction through their questions of her audience. She radiates excitement.
