Longing for Change is a beautiful intermediate piece that perfectly captures the desire for a new season. Slightly pensive yet still hopeful, the key and time changes are perfectly reminiscent of saying goodbye to one season so we can fully embrace another. Students and teachers will enjoy a piece that feels cathartic in its movement from craving a change to finally seeing it realized.
What level is Longing for Change?
Longing for Change is an intermediate to late intermediate piece. It starts in 3/4, and ends in 4/4 (right at the point where you can feel the season “changing!”). The beginning of the piece flits in and out of D Major and b minor, much like the dance between the changing of summer to fall. The piece changes key again, to Db Major, and then ends in F#M. The accidentals are written in for the F# key signature.
There is pedaling throughout the piece, but no pedal markings notated. The smallest note value is a sixteenth note. Fingerings are included for some passages. There are clef changes throughout (ex: the piece begins with both hands playing treble clef). Towards the end of the piece, we finally get the feeling of a resolute season change thanks to getting the V in the melody, where prior the melody was going back and forth between the I and IV, creating a feeling of longing, but no definite resolution.

What a beautiful, rich piano piece. My adult and teenage students are loving this. As the teacher, I am enjoying the mood of the music and the opportunity to work with students on using a touch of rubato. It’s delightful to have a more mature sound for my adults and teens with a matching title.

This piece was exactly what my teenager late intermediate student was looking for! She loves expressive and moving pieces, and isn’t shy to do running patterns in the left hand, so this fit the bill right away. As soon as I played her a sample of the song, she was hooked! An added benefit: this particular student sometimes resists working on pieces with key signatures in multiple flats, but since she knew there were only a few measures in 5 flats, she wasn’t too scared of that. Great way to stretch a student’s reading abilities! Beautiful piece, with lots of room for personal interpretation.

This is a fine piece for my adult student — gorgeous harmony changes and lots of interesting details to explore. Both of us are really enjoying it.

I was hesitant about “taking the time” in lessons for Halloween/Autumn music, but my students’ reactions to their new, fun pieces changed my mind! I gave “Longing for Change” to a high school girl to have a little break from Beethoven and Debussy. She was really happy to have something “just for fun.” The autumn bundle really has made October fun at my studio.

I’ve played Longing for Change recently for Prelude for Church and love it! It is so touching! You put together such lovely pieces for church. : )

My early teenaged student just loves this piece. She learnt it quickly and played it at our studio recital last December and in another concert prior to that. She and other students responded so well to the melancholy mood of the music and it’s great to have a piece that you can explore with a student how music grows and develops and the flexibility in tempo that’s required to shape its phrasing. Highly recommended indeed.

There is so much to love about this piece. <3 The invitation to play expressively, with rubato, is irresistible. Wendy's modulation from D Major/B minor to Db Major is genius. The little trip we take with the RH octaves, leaping up by fourths over the contrasting LH harmonies is fun to play, once mastered, and even more fun to listen to. The ambiguous ending is probably my favorite part. It's like you're on a precipice trying to decide if you want to try to fly or turn back.

Such an expressive solo, which I love to play, and makes a great teacher recital piece.

This piece is beautiful! I’ve assigned it to two of my early high school students, and they love how challenging and enjoyable it is. It’s so beautiful and allows them to express their emotions through music and learn and become better pianists. I highly recommend this piece!
