Coastal Reverie is a calming, peace-filled solo that allows even early level students to practice tone painting and story telling through their playing. The frequent change in dynamics adds a level of maturity to the piece, and shifting registers allow students to look and feel accomplished while in the black key stages of playing. The Finding Beautiful Places series is designed so teen and adults love even the first pieces they learn, and this piece is one students will truly enjoy.
What level is Coastal Reverie?
Coastal Reverie is an early elementary level piece on black keys (with one white key in the right hand). The hand position is clearly pictured on the first page. There are many dynamics written throughout the piece, and the time signature is 4/4. The pedal is held throughout the solo, and the smallest note value is a quarter note.
There are shifting registers towards the end of the piece, but with a pattern that students will likely have memorized by the time they reach it. The shifting registers provide an opportunity to teach correct technique for crossing hands even as an elementary learner. Finger numbers are written in for each note.
Bonus recording included!
Coastal Reverie comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.
More About the Finding Beautiful Places Series:
Coastal Reverie is a part of the Finding Beautiful Places series that gives older students (like teens and adults) beautiful music that doesn’t make them sound like a child. This series is especially easy and helpful as hand positions are pictured, finger numbers are indicated on each note, and the hands are mostly on the black keys so finding the correct notes are easy. This series is made especially for teens and adults as is part of our Music Adults Love® and Music Teens Love® collection – beautiful, mature sounding music that doesn’t sound like it comes from a child’s method book.
The collections in this series include:
- Finding Beautiful Places – EE (Early Elementary) Music on the black keys; For those with no prior piano experience
- Entering Beautiful Places – E (Elementary) Music for those who are transitioning to the white keys or who need to review their white key note names
- In Beautiful Places – E (Elementary) Music for mid elementary students containing some across the bar line syncopation, but music that is still quite achievable and beautiful at this level
- Exploring Beautiful Places – LE (Late Elementary) Music for the late elementary pianist that contains eighth notes that are easy to feel and play.
What is the Studio License?
Coastal Reverie is delivered digitally (through your email receipt) and is studio licensed. This means that you can print and use this for any student that you directly teach for your entire lifetime of teaching.

Rachel –
I just gave this to a teen beginner at his first lesson and he was able to have a mature and artistic solo to present after just one week of practice! What an absolute gift to older beginners to give them music had a mature sound and allows for expression!
Anna –
Coastal Reverie was a great relaxing piece to introduce after the Gathering Storm (one of the other pieces in the Finding Beautiful Places Bundle). Students enjoyed the mature sound, the ease of playing, and the simple instructions. They feel more advanced when they play this piece.
Janelle –
“Coastal Reverie” (and this series) is a WINNER! I gave this to a 3rd grade girl who learned it in a week, and she was all smiles at her next lesson! She had already begun “Gathering Storm”, so this was the 2nd piece of the set of 4 for her, and she began Misty Mountain yesterday. She loves these pieces so much! Thank you, Wendy, for creating such a special series of pieces that make our students sound amazing! And it’s good for business that their parents think we’re brilliant for our musical selections. 🙂
Dr. Steven Clifford –
Thank you for composing Coastal Reverie and Ancient Forest. They are a godsend for the complete beginner; immensely appealing and hugely uplifting. A joy to listen to and to play.
They made me realise that learning to play the piano is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
