Beginning teen and adult students especially will appreciate that they can enjoy even their earliest pieces!

What level is Misty Mountain?

Misty Mountain is an early elementary level piano solo played on four black keys and one white key. The hand position for this piece is clearly pictured at the top of the page. The smallest note value is a quarter note, and the pedal is held throughout the piece. The time signature is 4/4. Finger numbers are written in throughout the entire piece.

This piece explores multiple registers, but in a way that is attainable to early elementary students thanks to repeating patterns that are easily memorized.

Bonus recording included!

Misty Mountain comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.

  • Finding Beautiful Places – EE (Early Elementary) Music on the black keys; For those with no prior piano experience
  • Entering Beautiful Places – E (Elementary) Music for those who are transitioning to the white keys or who need to review their white key note names
  • In Beautiful Places – E (Elementary) Music for mid elementary students containing some across the bar line syncopation, but music that is still quite achievable and beautiful at this level

This week I taught a brand new adult student Misty Mountain. It was the perfect beginning piece! She loved the grandness and visions it gave her of fog and mist.

I’m using this piece with a young transfer student who reads well but has not been taught any technic. It’s so beautiful and flowing, and I’m using it to work on basic technical issues while she can enjoy playing something not challenging note-wise. She loves it!

Just had a student (second grade boy) tell me that this is his favorite piece ever. It is so musically satisfying and offers such a gorgeous “advanced” sound. It’s brilliant.

I really like Ancient Forest and Misty Mountain and how they are learning notes values, without the overwhelming of clef and staff reading.

I have received several comments about the beautiful artwork on the covers of ‘Finding Beautiful Places’ and ‘Entering Beautiful Places’ from parents and students. Some students automatically placed the artwork next to the music page at the piano, without me suggesting to do so.
Students immediately realized that the music is beautiful and quite manageable for their skill level. The students enjoyed the mature sounds.
From my perspective as a music teacher, it was evident that the students could apply the performance directions in a relaxed way, as they became comfortable with learning the piece quite quickly (playing correct notes, correct rhythm and at a good tempo).

A new favorite with my beginners. I use it after introducing finger numbers, quater and half notes. And now even the older brother of one of my students wants to take lessons and play this piece in particular. It is a beautiful piece and seems to appeal to youngs students as well as older students, girls and boys. It is a great piece to get your beginners who are not quite sure if they should take piano lessons hooked on the sound of the instrument.

Yes, yes, yes to ALL of Wendy’s compositions. They are beautiful, creative and my students love them. The big take away with Wendy is her passion for creating music that keeps students interested. This is obvious by not only her knowledge but the level of dedication and excitement in sharing her music, which is obvious in the webinars. Run, don’t walk, to share this great music with your students (and yourself)! Thank you Wendy!

I had an interview on Sunday with a 13 year old and she started tonight. She mentioned she liked lyrical pieces. Tonight, we did Misty Mountain from Finding Beautiful Places and her eyes got really big and she told me she really liked it!!! That it was beautiful 🙂 She saw the QR code and said “Cool!”

I had a student play this at a group lesson yesterday ( as well as a few others played various pieces from this series) and all the other students were in awe! everyone wants to play these pieces and my non practicers are actually wanting to get to the piano now ! parents are amazed at how beautiful their students playing is sounding and at how much they want to practice !
