What Pieces are in the Canadian Adventure Bundle?

Vancouver Island Sunset
This is a beautiful piece with patterns on the white keys. Wistful and melancholy, this piece is especially pleasing to the sensitive student, older beginners, teens, and adults as well.

I Want Some Water
This is such a catchy tune that you’ll have have a hard time forgetting it! But that’s good in this case because it helps students remember exactly what they are supposed to play. This catchy tune includes an edition with and without lyrics for maximum flexibility in teaching. It also comes with fast and slow mp3 recordings that you can send to students to whom you are teaching the piece.

Lumbering King
This piece is a heavy and bold and tells the musical story a polar bear lumbering through the Canadian frozen tundra. It features an easy glissando at the end which sounds impressive! This piece also come with a bonus edition with and without lyrics as well as bonus fast and slow mp3s.

What levels are the Canadian Adventure Bundle pieces?

These Reading and Rote piano teaching pieces are approximately mid-elementary. They can be taught by rote, by reading or a combination of both of them. If taught be rote, you can get the maximum learning benefit by also showing them the score and what they are doing at the keyboard that corresponds to the score.

Reading and Rote – a balanced approach to teaching piano

This Canadian Adventure bundle and the African Adventure bundle capitalize on the idea that students can play much more complicated music that they can read. If you only allow students to play music that they can read, they become discouraged with the “beginner” sound of their music. But when you give them music that can be taught by showing them patterns, they can play much more advanced sounding music, giving them them more advanced sound that will motivate them to learn to read. This produces students who stick with music lessons much longer and are more satisfied and excited about their progress. When they are excited, they practice more. And when they practice more, they get better faster!

My students especially love Lumbering King and I Want Some Water. The pieces use the entire keyboard range and sound more difficult than they are. It makes me beginners sound like they are quite experienced!

These are perfect for the students I had in mind when I bought them, and I’m sure they will continue be staples with my students of many different levels. I have an early elementary student who has family in Canada, and is really proud of that. He likes that these songs are Canadian-inspired! I’ve also found that “I Want Some Water” is a great introduction to phrasing two-note slurs. The “WA-ter” sound and feel is a perfect way to show a slightly accented first note with a light second note and gentle wrist lift.

After playing a handful of pieces for a student to choose from for our upcoming studio recital to no avail, I referred him to this website. He and his mother went through every single elementary piece and listened to each video, and he decided on Lumbering King and I Want Some Water. He is a changed student now! Lumbering King has helped him be comfortable playing forte – something we discussed nearly every lesson previously – and he is happy to move all over the piano. The glissando at the end is an added bonus, and his whole face lit up when I showed him how to do it for the first time. We began I Want Some Water last week, and I can’t wait to hear the progress he has made at his next lesson.
