Bundle: A Distant Blue, A Royal Invitation

A Distant Blue description

A Distant Blue is in C major with a dark, lowered 6th. The piece is easy to play and features easy hand crossings. The left hand contributes with deep fifths on C and F. A Distant Blue contains mostly steps and skips in the right hand, but it uses the entire piano with 8vas and easy whole tone scale passages.

All ages of students who enjoy melancholy or mysterious piano music will enjoy this piece!

A Royal Invitation Description

A Royal Invitation has a stately, grand feeling throughout the piece. It features easy to play patterns, pedal throughout, easy hand crossings, and deep bass sounds. The rhythms are easy and hand positions are familiar to elementary students. There are no eighth notes in this piece.

Lead by Example

When I first started teaching, I was afraid to play pieces for my students because I didn’t want them to strictly learn it by ear. However, I have come to realize that it is so important to model not only good technique for students by also model expressive playing. This gives them something gorgeous for which to strive and can inspire them to practice and reach for new heights of beauty.

So when introducing these pieces to students, please play them first. Show them the beauty. I think you’ll be glad you did!

Thank you, thank you Wendy. Two of my students are playing A Distant Blue. Both are super excited saying it sounds more difficult than it is. Another is playing A Royal Invitation and vows to play as many pieces by Wendy Stevens as she is able to. I like students picking a favorite composer as they also pick favorite authors and artists.

I have both ‘A Distant Blue’ and ‘A Royal Invitation’. My students love these pieces. Students feel like ‘real’ piano players with the moving hand positions, but they are easy as they are pattern based. A great way to learn the geography of the piano, and sounding and looking very accomplished!

So far so good! Only one student has learned it at the time of writing. She said she likes it and it’s a good piece for her to start learning treble CDEFG and above.
She likes the patterns. We are having a lot of fun being creative and applying all the ‘lesson stuff’ from her regular lesson books

I recently purchased A Distant Blue and A Royal Invitation. I gave both of these pieces to a student that is a constant complainer. We started working on these pieces last week and at her lesson yesterday, I was delighted to find that she had learned both pieces. She loves these pieces and is very proud that she learned these pieces so quickly. Of the two, my favorite is A Distant Blue. It is not difficult but it does not sound like a teaching piece. It is more sophisticated than a typical teaching piece. A Royal Invitation is a quick learn and a student will find that this is a “wow piece.” Keep those great pieces coming!

Love these pieces! These are wonderfully creative to add to a students guild program, 30 piece challenge or for a recital. Because they are studio licensed I have many students playing them either for sight reading material, weekly piece or a recital piece. Thanks Wendy!

This bundle came at just the right time, with me prepping and planning for the spring recital. My early intermediate and elementary students are really enjoying both pieces. I’m surprised how quickly my younger students are learning this by rote!

Wendy knows her stuff as these pieces are pedagogically sound, and fun to play (and listen to as the teacher). During a recent lesson while learning A Distant Blue, my 9year old student stopped, turned to me and said, “wow, that sounds really cool”. And we were only on the first page. Can’t recommend this bundle more highly. Thanks Wendy!!

This is a beautiful little piece. It sounds very mature and thoughtful, but it’s quite easy to learn. The patterns make it very simple to teach by rote. Very nice for the “sensitive” student to find some self-expression. Right now, I’m using it with a 12-year old (who should be further along in their studies than they actually are). It’s been a motivating piece for them. It’s giving them the satisfaction of getting a “full sound” out of the piano without having to exert themselves with reading the notation. I have a few younger students who will also enjoy this piece in the near future.

All your music is so “Kid Friendly” I love it. Every piece I have purchased is easily learned but doesn’t sound like it is so “easy” and boring.
The music keeps the children’s attention.
    Thank you

Such a lovely, atmospheric piece. My students absolutely love this. One of my boys will perform it at a school assembly in the next few weeks.
