Online Education Videos for Piano Teachers

I’m a huge fan of educational videos, online articles, and webinars for keeping my teaching fresh and exciting.  I don’t have a lot of time these days, so anything that I can watch or read late at night is of great value to me as a teacher and composer.

In the last month, I’ve come across some interesting online educational videos for teachers.  The only drawback is that there are no continuing education credits for “attending” or reading these resources!

  • Technique Vidoes by Gayle Kowalchyk.  Gayle is one of the composers and authors of the new Alfred Premier Piano Course.  These 9 videos demonstrate the 9 technique Tools from this series.  Even if you don’t use the series, you may find some good tips for teaching technique here.
  • MTNA Conference Articles.  If you don’t already know, Natalie blogged live at the 2010 MTNA Conference in New Mexico this year.  This link takes you to her blog index where you can read a number of summaries of the sessions at the conference.
  • My First Piano Adventures Video Guide. This is a workshop that Randall Faber did detailing how to teach some of the concepts in their preschool series.
  • Video Blog of 2010 MTNA Conference.  Robyn Pfeifer is fairly new to the blogging scene, but her video blogging of portions of the MTNA Conference was a good idea.  She has several other interviews that she has promised to post sometime (including one with Gary Ingle), but for now here are her MTNA Conference posts:
Important Studio Documents for Teachers (interview with Beth Klingenstein and Lee Galloway.  Beth is the author of The Independent Teacher’s Studio Handbook published by Hal Leonard.
Music Learning Community (interview with Christine Hermanson)
Teaching Chopin at the Piano (A few tips Robyn learned on Pedagogy Saturday)

If you know of other online videos from composers, publishers, or music teachers, please comment about them!

  1. Thanks for posting – I didn’t know about the Kowalchyk videos or the Robin Pfeifer posts!

I haven’t had a chance to read/watch all of this yet, but the Univ. of Texas has a huge document online complete with video excerpts of 3 expert teachers (including Nelita True) – The Nature of Expertise: 19 Principles of Effective Instruction Demonstrated by Three Distinguished Artist-Teachers in Music. http://cml.music.utexas.edu/DistinguishedStream/Abstract.htm Click on the links on the right side of the page to navigate.

  2. What an incredible resource! Thanks for sharing. I’ll be checking these out in the coming weeks!
