5 Reasons You Should Be Talking About This Song

Recently, a most unusual piece found itself for sale on the ComposeCreate website. If you saw it, then you know of what I speak. And if you watched the video, you know that I haven’t really gone as crazy as you first thought. BUT, just in case you are still on the fence about “The Booger Song,” I wanted to share a few thoughts about why this piece might help us climb out of our own comfortable places in life and actually connect with our students. So here are:

5 Reasons You Should Be Talking About “The Booger Song”

The Booger Song Wendy Stevens1. It makes kids laugh

When was the last time you heard your student laugh or snicker while playing their method piece? Their supplemental piece? Any piece at all? Shouldn’t at least some of their music make them that happy?

2. It makes you uncomfortable

When I’m perfectly comfortable in life, it usually means I’m not thinking or growing. I’m just on auto-pilot. So if nothing else, I hope “The Booger Song” makes you ask, “Why are kids wild about this song?” or “What could be wrong with singing my lectures in a funny way rather than boring children with endless nagging?” “Why not have fun with kids and enter into their world of issues?”

3. It makes you think about what connects with kids and why

It’s so easy to settle into being an adult and not give much more thought to what it’s like to be a child. But kids are constantly being told what to do, what not to do, how to do it, how to not do it, why it shouldn’t be done, and so much more. If there’s anything I’m learning as a parent, it’s that it’s okay to have fun while I’m teaching my kids. Yes, I want them to be polite and have proper manners, but what’s wrong with putting that into a hilarious song that makes them smile instead of a lecture that makes them roll their eyes?

4. It causes kids to run to the piano and practice

I’m not kidding about this. It’s happened in my home a number of times.

5. It’s time to remember what it’s like to be a kid again (and still keep your sensibility as an adult)

It’s so easy to forget what it’s like to be a kid. We forget that what we think of as little problems for kids are actual big problems to them. Boogers are a real problem for kids. And let’s be honest…for adults too.

So, I hope “The Booger Song” does something positive for your studio. If you own it or are going to buy it, then I know it’s going to make your studio a more fun place to be. But if you don’t, I hope it provides an opportunity to stop and put yourself in your students’ shoes for a moment. Wonders can come from this!
