Tips from the SMU Institute (Part 4)

These tips come from Allen Long, another great teacher I met at the SMU Institute for Piano Teachers. Allen actually studied at SMU and you can learn more about him, his studio, and his amazing singing dog on his website. Here are some of the tips that Allen wanted to share:

From Scott McBride Smith, on teaching boys:

Boys want to admire you and think that you are cool. They don’t want to like you, but they want to admire you.

From Wendy Stevens on Best Stress-free Business Practices for 2012:

Business is setting good policies to create a framework so that we can have the best possible relationship with our families.

From Robert Vandall in his talk on how to help students play quickly:

The only way to learn to play fast is to play fast.

Don’t forget that you can read more short, easily implementable tips from these posts: Wendy’s tips, Dorla’s Tips, Leila’s Tips.

  1. I am loving these tips on teaching boys. I wish SMS would write an article for Clavier Companion or MTNA journal. Never having been a boy myself, and never having raised any boys, I am finding these comments spot on and priceless. Please keep them coming, and if you have any influence with Scott, give him a big nudge! Thanks
