Are you feeling isolated as a music teacher? Are you on the verge of burnout? If so, a summer pedagogy workshop might be just the thing you need to energize your teaching! I know that I am always energized when I am around other teachers and when I attend great conferences. I always love going to the yearly MTNA convention, but when I can’t make it, I often forget about the great summer workshops that are offered around the country. Here are some you might consider attending:
The University of St. Thomas Summer Workshops in Piano Pedagogy take place in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 14-18. Some of the guests will be Jane Magrath, Terrie Manno, Kathryn Ananda-Owens, Gerald Klickstein, and Martha Hilley.
Ohio University Keyboard Pedagogy Seminar features Randall Faber thi year and will be held June 25-26. Students of teachers attending may audition to participate in a masterclass with Randall Faber. The deadline to submit an audio file for consideration is May 24th. Other clinicians include Gail Berenson and Christopher Fisher, author of the new group piano pedagogy book: Teaching Piano in Groups.
National Group Piano/Piano Pedagogy Forum will have its 10th anniversary biennial meeting on August 6–7, 2010, at the University of Texas’ Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music in Austin. This two-day conference will concentrate on the specific needs of college and university teachers of group piano and piano pedagogy.
The MTAC Convention (Music Teachers Association of California) is celebrating their 110th convention at this year’s event, July2-6. Non-members may attend for a slightly higher rate than members. Members report that this is an incredible convention!
Likewise, the TMTA Convention in Arlington, Texas can be attended by any musician for a slightly higher rate than for members. The four-day conference looks like a great event that I am looking forward to attending! I have the privilege of presenting a Hal Leonard showcase with Jennifer Linn entitled, But What Does Musical Mean? at 5:00 on Saturday.
In the fall and beyond…
The OU Piano Pedagogy Department has its piano teacher summeer workshops every 2-4 years. Their last conference was in 2009.
The World Piano Pedagogy Conference will be held October 20-23 in Dallas, Texas.
The 2011 MTNA conference will be March 26-30 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
