I often wonder if we condition children to like and be attracted to lyrics that rhyme and have a predictable syntax. Certainly there is something to be said for the rhythm of words and children’s attraction to such (Dr. Seuss, case in point). But, I think we often rely to heavily on lyrics that rhyme and thus produce some very lame lyrics just for the sake of the rhyme.
In the same way, I wonder less and believe more that children are conditioned into liking music that is square. Perhaps this came about because pedagogical composers and publishers thought that square music would be easier and more “pedagogical,” but I wonder if we do a disservice to our children by teaching them only “alarmingly predictable” music.
Bravo to the composers of pedagogical music that put those assymetries in. I find that my students love them as long as I am excited about the music as I introduce it.
