I’m so excited to tell you about my new piece, just in time for your fall programs! It’s called Scatterbrained Scarecrow and it’s a Level 3 piece with lots of fun rhythms, staccatos, and hand crossings. The most difficult rhythms are only eighth note pairs! Here’s what Hal Leonard says about the piece:
This scarecrow ode is a little scatterbrained, with its frequent cross-overs and 4/4 and 3/4 meters! Kids will love the keyboard choreography and “crazy energy” of this new gem from Wendy Stevens.
You can see a sample of the music by clicking on the Closer Look from the Hal Leonard website.
As usual, I’m going to be doing a giveaway of the piece. Just leave a comment in this post by Sunday, August 7th (I made a mistake in the last email and am extended the date because of it). I’ll use a random number generator to choose a winner on Monday. I’d love to hear what kind of fall recitals you all do! You can receive extra entries by commenting about doing any of the following:
- Leave a comment. I’d love to hear about your fall recitals!
- Blog about the new piece linking to this post.
- Share the post by emailing a link to a piano teaching friend.

I just bought this piece yesterday. I’m so excited to get it. You can bet that one of my students will be playing it at my Halloween Festival this year! ;0)
Yay! Thanks for letting me know, Jennifer!
Wendy, I’m so thrilled to see another piece! “Twister” is a studio favorite so I know this new one will drum up some more excitement! It’s going on my list of purchases for the fall!
I ALWAYS love a new piece of piano solo music! And to have a Fall piece that’s not Halloween oriented is great! Can’t wait to get a copy:)
That’s so great. Congratulations on publishing a new piece. I have your Twister and the kids love it. I look forward to having your new music in my collection.
This is the 1st year my kids will be playing in a Halloween Recial at a local mall. They’re really excited & I would love to have this piece to add to my repetoire. I love your energy and creative edge Wendy! Shows in everything you do!
I can think of a few “scatterbrained” students–and some who are just plain imaginative–who would find this piece very appealing! I don’t usually hold a fall recital but had already been considering one for this year. This piece gives me more incentive to go ahead with it.
Sounds exciting! I have a formal recital coming up in September. 🙂
Very cool! My studio doesn’t actually have a fall recital, but we do have a winter recital. This fall I plan on doing some group lessons so that my students can get some extra performance practice in! (Sharing this via my Facebook studio page!)
As your pieces always do, this looks very fun. I can think of several students already who would love to give this a try!
I will be moving this fall so I don’t think I’ll be able to plan a fall recital. This looks very interesting though and I would love to add a copy to my music library! I posted a link to this on my blog. I am really inspired by your creativity. Thanks so much!
What a fun piece… it’s nice to be able to have “closer look” at it! Because I keep a small studio w/ many students within the same families, for one fall recital I was able to hold an informal Backyard Potluck BBQ at my home. It was nice to have a less formal setting and get to socialize a bit more than normal.
Fantastic! I know of several students in my studio that would love this!
I hope I win. The picture looks adorable.
I loved hearing YOU play this! I already have it on my list to order in the next few weeks.
I look forward to seeing your new composision. I have a student who neds inspiration and help with the
eigth note groups. Your titles are so intriging.!
I just got my “Halloween box” out of the closet last week. Looking forward to the chance of getting a new piece of music. Enjoying meeting you at the NCKP in Chicago!
Thank you for writing a new Halloween piece. I get tired of pulling out the old ones year after year. The switch to 3/4 time on the first page will indeed surprise everyone. I imagine it will be my students’ first introduction to a time change within a piece. It was good to meet you at NCKP. Thanks for arranging to do that.
Wendy, your web site is always inspiring to me! Unfortunately, I did not receive my e-mail to enter the contest in time (I got it today, August 2nd), but I will go and take a look at the preview on the Hal Leonard site.
Donna, I am so sorry! I just realized that I gave conflicting information about the giveaway. It’s not scheduled to happen until tomorrow, August 5th, so you are definitely still in time! Thanks so much for commenting…you comment alerted me to the problem.
The score looks great! I am not a pianist, but a flutist, so I will donate it to a music school if I win 🙂
Oh good! I’m still in time to enter the contest! I took a look at the first page over at the Hal Leonard site, and the piece looks VERY cute!
From one of your music friends in Topeka, I welcome adding Scarecrow to my music list. It will be chosen early, I’m sure. Thanks. Joan
Last year, our local MTA decided to “officially” make our fall Student Recital a dress-up event. It seems like so many parents these days don’t like their kids doing “Halloween music”, so I’m always happy to find a piece that has a “fall flavor” … but isn’t about ghosts, spiders, or skeletons. They could play this, dress up as a scarecrow, and fit right into our recital! yay!

Such a cute piece. I sure my students would enjoy.
Thanks, Wendy for the update. Your ideas are always inspiring. This looks like a fun one! We have a fall recital, and I always think the students enjoy playing the seasonal pieces so much, that a LITTLE of the nervousness disappears! Linda
My students would love to play your delightful song….Please enter me into your drawing….thanks…..ruth
This looks like a great piece! I have a few picky students and I’d love to have them try it!
What a cute piece, Wendy! I’m eager to see what comes next after the last measure we can view which is in 3/4, not 4/4. I like to use fall/Halloween music with my students as they enjoy the change of mood which is exciting even to older students.
Your message… Wendt,
Thankyou for letting your creative juices flow. I will try this out with students for the end of October mini concert. We get together – sometimes costumed – and have a small concert at lunch time. – Play and eat!

This will be a very fun piece for my students to use in an area Fall Music Festival. Thanks for creating compositions that sound much more difficult than they are.
Looks like a neat piece!
I also love the title! How did you come up with it? I would love to hear that!!
I want one. Looks great!
This is the perfect piece for our fall performance. Love it,
I’d love a copy – it looks great! Thanks for the giveaway!
Looking forward to playing and teaching this piece. Thanks for writing a fall piece instead of another Halloween piece. Level 3 pieces are always needed for many of my students.
We like to do a Halloween recital. The kids love to dress up and play spooky songs! This would be a cute little solo that I know would be perfect for one of my kids!
This looks like a wonderful piece, Wendy. Keep these coming!!
