This set of ComposeCreate® Summer Fun Short Sheets® features 3 one-page black key piano solos for your beginning students. These pieces show the hand position in a picture and students can read the notes by finger numbers as they do in traditional method books. The pieces are fun and all related to things that kids love to do in the summer including eating s’mores, going on a roller coaster ride, and riding your bike.
These pieces and other Short Sheets® are designed to be easier to teach and easier to learn. They can be especially useful for summer lessons, online lessons (since longer pieces are more difficult to teach), busy students, students who need more time learning a particular concept and students who need to review. In addition, it is always helpful to have students read more music even at an easier level to help them learn to how to sight read more effectively. These Summer Fun black key Short Sheets® are also effective when young students need “special” music for recitals and festivals that are outside their lesson books.
Included are these one-page pieces:
- Summer’s Here
- S’mores
- No Hands!
What Level is the Summer Fun Collection?
The pieces in Summer Fun are early elementary. The smallest rhythm value is the quarter note and quarter rest. The pieces are predominantly on the black keys, though one position does include a white key, but this is easy because the finger naturally falls between the black keys to this note. All pieces are carefully edited to be solid piano pedagogy material.
What are Short Sheets®?
Short Sheets® are collections of 3 one page pieces to help motivate your busy students who need to learn music quickly. These sets of one pages pieces (including this Summer Fun collection) are excellent for:
- Online lessons (they are easy to teach)
- Summer lessons (they are fun and don’t take as much time to learn
- Sight reading
- Students with short attention spans,
- Young students who are afraid of lengthy pieces (you’d be surprised at how many of your student balk at 2 page pieces)
- Busy students (isn’t that all students these days?)
- Students who want to learn an awesome piece of music quickly
And as a teacher, you’ll love Short Sheets® because you know that the more music students learn, the better their sight-reading skills!
Are there bonuses to Summer Fun?
Yes, even though the price is incredibly low (see more under “What is the studio license?” below) we still are including bonus mp3 performances of these black key Summer Fun pieces with your purchase. You are permitted to send these example performance tracks to your students to help them learn the piece.

These are an instant success. For those children who struggle with always having to concentrate on reading notes they are a moment of light relief.
They have saved one of my students who likes to play but can’t always manage to concentrate for a full lesson without something a little different.
I am going to use this to get him to improvise to using the same formula. Thank you Wendy. All my students love your music.

Summer’s Here was just what I needed for a 5-yo boy who was feeling overwhelmed trying to learn anything new on the white keys this summer. Thank you, Wendy, for your focus on black-keys music.

A great solution to helping a few beginners who weren’t yet competent on the black key pre staff reading songs when they arrived at the early staff reading chapter of their lesson books. These short songs were perfect for creating quick wins with kids who have trouble concentrating or who weren’t practicing much for a season. All 3 songs were interesting for the students, built confidence in their playing skills and created a bridge to longer songs.

I’ve had a few young beginners this year and it being summer here in NZ these pieces were an obvious choice. They all enjoyed playing them, especially the little variations from just standard on the black keys pieces.
