Feel the crackling energy of the recess playground in this jig-like piece! Your students will love trying to race to the finish line (or they even might hear the “red rover” chant), and you’ll love the opportunities for musicality! The painting that inspired the piece is Playing Children, a work Peter Hansen painted in 1907-1908.
What level is Recess Rally?
Recess Rally is in C Major and set in a fast triple meter. Flats and naturals appear in this piece. The smallest note value in this piece is the quarter note. There is pedaling through most of it. The biggest interval is a fifth. The piece is carefully edited with pedagogical fingering and articulations, making this an excellent teaching or recital piece!

I just gave Recess Rally to one of my students in lesson today. I absolutely love the Celtic sound of this sweet piece. I gave it to this student because I know she likes a challenge and this is beyond where she is in her lesson books. However, the way that it is written allows the student to be challenged yet it is not beyond their reach. The melody is absolutely delightful and allows the student to play in several octaves. My studio is jampacked with Wendy Stevens music and we are never disappointed.
