Mid-Air Meditation makes it easy to imagine you’re sitting in the basket of a hot air balloon, watching the world float by below you. The B section features measures of half notes that sound like the burner in a hot air balloon letting out more flame to make the balloon rise further in the air. The return to the A section gives students an opportunity to play with dynamics that reflect being even further in the sky.

What level is Mid-Air Meditation?

Mid-Air Meditation is a late elementary solo. The piece is in C Major, with both hands playing in bass clef for a majority of the song. The easy key signature makes this a wonderful opportunity for students who may still struggle playing in the bass clef to work on note name and interval recognition.

There is pedaling throughout the piece, and the B section includes pedaling more than once within a measure, another technique students at this level may not have had an opportunity to explore. Both hands play with 5-finger patterns throughout the piece, making it easier to play in multiple registers when the piece calls for it.

The smallest note value in this piece is an eighth note. There are many ties into the first beat throughout the piece.

Bonus recording included!

Mid-Air Meditation comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.

Mid air meditation is a huge hit with young teen and adult students. They get the relaxing emotion right away. The adults also like Seaside Retreat and Eastern Harbor.

I purchase this Mid Air Meditation, Seaside Retreat, and Eastern Harbor bundle. My students had a choice to pick out their favorite one and they honestly could not choose only because they loved them all. The pieces are absolutely beautiful and a perfect fit for adults as well as preteens. They have such a peaceful sound.

I loved the music that I purchased which was the Seaside Meditation, Eastern Harbour, and Mid-Air Meditation. They give beginner students pieces to play that are layered and seemingly complex without becoming complicated.

One of my tween students will be playing this piece in my upcoming recital. She has really enjoyed working on it and now plays it beautifully! It is a great piece to practice pedaling. Of course, Wendy is so good at composing pieces that take the pianist many places on the keyboard! A wonderful piece!

I had students played Dusty Blue and Mid-Air Meditation at our recital. The students loved the pieces as well as the audience. Dusty Blue was performed on the Clavinova with a synth sound. Very pretty!

I recently discovered how wonderful this piece is (after Exploring Beautiful Places 2 came out!)–it sounds like a movie soundtrack. Very peaceful & attractive, and a sophisticated sound! Thank you Wendy for this lovely piece!

I needed a quick-to-learn, beautiful piece for high schooler between more challenging pieces, and this fits the bill wonderfully.

I have a young teenage student who has never practiced piano in almost two years of lessons. He even recently completed his first practical exam with the Royal Conservatory (RCM) without practicing, except for very minimally a week or so before the exam. (We’ve always had 45-minute lessons, so the lessons end up being guided practice sessions … ) He did very well on his exam anyway as he’s quite talented, and it was the easiest of the elementary exams, but he could’ve been a gold medal contender if he’d applied himself.

I introduced Mid-Air Mediation to him a few weeks back, and to my shock, he began practicing daily, had the piece fluent and memorized in no time and was thrilled to play it for me! I asked him what had motivated him to practice and he said, “Well, it helps when I really like the song!”

This beautiful piece is relatively easy but very satisfying to play. Students feel like they are playing a real song that they can lose themselves in, not some contrived sounding or childish melody designed to teach this or that.

I have a high school boy who chose to learn this piece. As he plays it, I can sense tension in him ebbing away, hear his breathing deepen. Wendy has captured the peace of hot-air ballooning in this lovely song. Its patterns and bass clef notes carry such a depth, and it engages the imagination. Beautiful!
