Much like its color, Marigold is a warm and cozy piece. Not quite cheerful, but far above melancholy, the unexpected harmonies in this piece sound more mature and advanced than the notes being played. Interesting conversations to help with expression can happen around these Color Music pieces: how can music describe a color? How could we bring out more of the oranges in the color? More of the yellows?
This piece is easy to teach by rote, reading or most effectively, as a combination of both Rote and Reading®.
What level is Marigold?
Marigold is an elementary piece. The smallest note value is a quarter note, and the damper can be held throughout or lifted on each line (students and teachers can choose). Multiple registers are explored with repeating patterns, and ritardando and a tempo markings add a mature sound to the piece.
The 6/4 time signature is easy to play thanks to all quarter notes (save for 3 dotted half notes). The accidentals are written in throughout and the beginning hand position can be found easily on the black keys. Any student who has played on the black keys at the beginning of their study will find this piece easy as the left hand moves by half step and the movement can be taught by rote.
