Letters from Abigail is from the Inspiring Portraits series which honors people in history who may have been forgotten or overlooked, but have been extremely influential in shaping the world. Letters from Abigail is a touching solo that highlights how Abigail Adams used the tools available to her – words, ink, and paper – to help shape a country.

This is the paragraph included at the top of this piece of music:

Abigail Adams used her amazing intellect, writing prowess, and the simple tools of ink and paper to influence the shaping of an entire country. While her husband John Adams was away for long periods, in Philadelphia as a delegate and in France as an ambassador, Abigail would faithfully write him long letters in which they would often discuss the direction the young republic should take. While many opportunities were not open to women at the time, Abigail used the tools available to her to make a difference in the lives of those around her, and ultimately in many lives today.

Level of Letters from Abigail

Letters from Abigail is a mid-intermediate piano solo written in A Major. The smallest note value is the sixteenth note (in groups of 2). The piece is in common time with just a few minor meter changes. Pedaling is clearly indicated throughout the entire piece.

Slurs demonstrating musical phrases, meticulous dynamics and suggestions for tempo changes will help any intermediate student to play this piece with nuance. Helpful fingering is indicated in the piece.

Bonus

As with all ComposeCreate® music, Letters from Abigail comes with the beautiful cover. But we also include an mp3 recording of Wendy Stevens playing the piece. This mp3 may be given to students to help them learn the piece more quickly or to mimic nuance.

What is a studio license?

Letters from Abigail comes with a studio license which licenses the purchasing teacher to print as many copies as needed for any student they directly teach. So it is like getting an unlimited supply of this Music Kids Love® for yourself and your students. The studio license is not a multi-teacher license, so it can only be used by one teacher. However, the music and bonus can be used by as many students as the purchasing teacher directly instructs on a regular basis.

Are there more Inspiring Portraits?

Yes, there are more that will be released in the coming years. Stay tuned!

I have several students who enjoy playing lyrical, expressive pieces. Letters from Abigail is their latest favorite. Beautifully written in A major, there’s opportunities to work on various technical skills such as proper voicing and arpeggios while also being treated to a lovely melodic line and touching harmonies. I highly recommend this piece for your students.

One of my students is working on “Letters from Abigail.”  She loves the piece and the idea of connecting music to the life of someone who lived a long time ago, but still inspires.

My granddaughter is working on this piece a little at a time.  It is a little challenging but each time we work on it, she likes it more and more.  I enjoy the piece and I like that it is about a real person.  It brought up conversations of how women were limited in the past as to what they could do publicly.  We also both like biographies.  I want to read this one and encourage her to look it up also.  I give her lessons online because she lives out of state.  Thanks for your beautiful music.

This is a great teaching piece for students who love heartful and touching melodies. I love the story behind this composition and a great history lesson of a wonderful wife to a great country man, John Adams. The A Major key is perfect for the melodic lines and harmony.
