Jaguar Jungle explores both the sneaky and bounding sides of a jaguar. The LH motive sounds sneaky thanks to chromaticism, and is perfect for teaching ties and phrasing. This piece is simple for students to learn, but sounds bigger than it really is because of the dynamics and use of many octaves.
This Rote and Reading® piece contains many patterns that can be taught by rote, reading, or both. These patterns make this piece easy to learn for most mid-elementary students.
What Level is Jaguar Jungle?
Jaguar Jungle is a mid elementary piece. There are C# and Eb accidentals throughout the piece, but no key signature is used. There is no pedal, and the smallest note value is a quarter note. There are a lot of opportunities in this piece for dynamic phrasing.

The Power of Rote and Reading® Teaching
Piano students are much more excited about their progress when you combine rote teaching with reading. And when you do this, students stay motivated longer. This is because kids know that they can play music that is much more difficult than they can read.
Think of the way kids learn to read. They first learn to “do” the language (i.e. speak it) before they ever learn to read it. In the same way, students best learn when we show them how to “do” the piano before they learn to read the notes. For more thoughts on the value of rote teaching and how long it really takes a child to learn to read music, read: How Long Does It Take to Learn to Read Music?

I’m using this piece with rank beginners, as a rote teach piece. My boys LOVE it and spontaneously play
it at the beginning of every lesson. The repeated rhythmic figure at the beginning is SOLID GOLD for them—-and then it comes back! They obviously feel very cool playing it. Cracks me up! After the third week of working
on the repeated “stalking” mid-section, they start to get the concept of crescendo. SO FUN!!

Jaguar Jungle has also been a favorite of one of my students!

Our football team is the Jaguars. This little boy beginner loves it as he is a huge jaguar fan. It’s working great for him! Thank you for always providing super great pieces good for recitals.
