Taking inspiration from the windy rush in pieces like Chopin’s “Winter Wind” etude and Fantasie-Impromptu, this Howling Winds concert etude gives intermediate students a chance to blow their audiences away with a flurry of notes that lies well under the hands. Written in A-B-A’ form, Howling Winds is written in contrasting textures. The piece opens with the right hand supporting a melodic bass line in the left, then the roles are reversed when the right hand gets a chance to howl through the trees on this dark and stormy night.
What Level is Howling Winds?

Falls under the fingers really nicely, ideal for teaching the 12/8 time signature and sounds really impressive.
Sharon B. Girard, NCTM –
Impressive piece in compound meter that just lies perfectly under the fingers with a great A harmonic minor scale to end the piece in a spooky quietness.

I absolutely love Howling Winds!
My pianostudents were suprised how fast they were able to learn this virtuoso sounding piece, because of the recognizable patterns that were used by the composer.
